Do they have about the same cut? Does 3M use DAT? Which will finish better?

Mark,

Try to determine the grit 3M Rubbing Compound will remove. I believe Meguiar's M105 will remove 1200 - 1500 grit so this would be a good indicator. I think 3M is about 1200 - 1500 so if this is the case then I'd say yes.

Thanks, Bobby. Do you know if it can be had over the counter?

3m Rubbing Compound can be found at most NAPAs. If not, they can order it.

I hear 105 is supposed to leave a decent finish for a compound.

3M has many different compounds. IMO most of them do cut faster but they also don't finish down as well. The 3M Extra Cut Compound cuts noticeably more than M105 but the finish it leaves is so nasty that it will require your to follow with something like M105 anyway. I keep some 3M stuff on hand but only bust it out when I absolutely have to....which is usually wet sanding on some very hard paint.

Rocks in a bottle! :D

I started calling on Body Shops in 1988 and this, or something similar was in just about every shop I called on... It was called Super Duty but I remember a different part number... could be the same...

Back then it was us against them, that is Meguiar's against 3M and now 20 years later 3M owns Meguiar's.

Go figure...

That stuff was nasty too! Silica dust anyone? :bolt:

It's true about M105. I'm looking for a similar cut compound that doesn't dry as fast as M105.

Mark,

This may not be the correct answer but I tried a spritz of baby oil and it really makes Meguiar's M105 behave!

Body shops, professional detailers, and dealerships will all benefit from drastically reduced buffing time, aggressive defect removal, and incredible clarity and color.

M95 Speed-Cut Compound
Designed specifically for detailers who prefer to work with more traditional, fast-cutting compounds, M95 Speed Cut(tm) Compound provides quick defect removal and a traditional compound feel, but uses exclusive new Meguiar's technology to make the buffing process faster and safer with superior results. Unlike competing compounds that use crystalline silica, a cutting agent that can scour or swirl paint and is harmful if inhaled, M95 uses exclusive abrasive agents that are safe and VOC-compliant to produce a stunning result. Whether you're working with a freshly painted and sanded surface or buffing flaws off a factory finish, M95 Speed Cut Compound delivers incredibly fast defect removal.

I've used the 3M Rubbing compound from WalMart and it cuts fast. From what I remember (it's been a long time) the residue was really hard to wipe back off.

What about UC? I thought it was supposed to be similar in cut to 105, but has more oils for longer work time?

Can the Flex 3403 *efficiently* handle a meguiars 7" wool solo pad? Also, was m86 designed for fresh paint?
