5.5 Backing plate on a LHR 21ES?

Yes

Edit: I should clarify RUPES does not at all recommend this. Not sure if this will void your machine warranty or not. But I have a 5" on my 21 and really like it. Todd or Dylan might chime in yet....

•So..it looks like you're planning on using a
non-Rupes backing plate on a Rupes polisher?

•Being that the Rupes System is said
to be a "balanced" system:
-It'd be interesting to find out the weight difference
between the non-Rupes 5.5" bp, and Rupes' 5" bp.

To clarify I would use the smaller Rupes BP. I just thought I read 5.5"

Are the backing pads interchangeable?

Short answer - Yes.

Long answer - still yes, but with an asterisk.

The LHR21 and LHR15 are a system approach to paint correction. In order to balance the large orbit of the tools the backing plate and even pads are specifically weighted. Even using a different pad on the stock backing plate can drastically increase the amount of vibration in the system. Switching plates and running a different size pushes that even further.

While we can't say DON'T SWAP YOUR PLATE, I simply caution anyone who does about the excessive vibration and the side effects that result as you are somewhat reversing the extremely precise and elegant engineering that went into allowing these large orbit tools to operate so smoothly.

I use a Rupes 5" backing plate (or 5.5"?) with my LHR21Es and have no problems. I still find it overall to be smooth. Maybe I have lost a little of the smoothness if I were to use the larger backing plate and larger pads, but it is still miles smoother than my PC7424XP! I am overall very satisfied with how the tool performs.
