5.5 VS. 6.5 Hydro-Tech pads

What's the pros/cons of using the 5.5 vs the 6.5.???

I am planning to buy the Griots, so from what I read I can use the 6.5.
But wouldn't the 5.5 be a bit easier to use? Would they do a better job but just take a little longer?

Used both the 5.5" Hydro-Tech pads on the Griot's polisher yesterday to remove water spot etchings out of a clear coat finish on a Corvette using the Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover and it wasn't even a challenge.

I like the 5.5 size and with the Griot's ROP you'll almost feel like you're working with a very safe rotary buffer.

Hey Mike, so you used a smaller backing plate on the Griots?

I worked perfectly. The guy I was showing it to has always used a rotary buffer and doesn't get on forums so he had know idea what a dual action polisher is.

Needless to say, he wants one now!

Sorry to ask silly questions, but do you need any type of adaptor for the backing plate or is it plug and play?

It doesn't plug in you unscrew the old one while using a wrench to hold the shaft on the machine unscrew to old one and screw on the new one very easy to do (Even a cave man can do it ):props:
 
Oops! so much info I got confused. It comes with the 6" backing plate. I will stick with the recommendations of Buckskincolt and get the 6.5" pads. According to the Hydro-tech info I can use these all the way to the corners and curves since they are so thick. Will this do or is it necessary to get a small plate and pads for those areas?

Cee Dog,

I can see some advantages to the 5.5" pads, they would get into tighter spots, & they will correct faster. I would opt for the 5.5" pads if you do not plan to buy the 4" pads to start with. The 6.5" pads are great for large area's but IMHO the 5.5's would fit more uses. I will be buying the 5.5's the next time I buy pads. To bad you would need the 5" backing plate but I think in the long run you will be happier. Just my .02

Buckskincolt, Thanks for all the great info. You've really made this easier for me! If I have to buy new backer anyway should I just go ahead and get the 4"? Or could I just do it all with the 5"?How much faster do you think for correction with 5.5 vs. 6.5? 10% or less?
And 1 more ? Do I really need the HD chord for proper power? Is my extension chord not going to give it the same power like they insinuate? I really don't like adding 30$ for that

I have a Flex 4301. Can I use the 5.5" pads on the Flex4301 and if so do I need a different backing plate

Thank You for the comp, just trying to help out with what I have struggled with and found to work best. Remember I'm a noob too!:buffing:

If it were me and wanted one machine to do it all then I would keep the 6" backing plate, order some more 6.5" HT pads to go with the ones you got from Meghan. Then add the LC 3.5" backing plate and the 4" Hydro-Tech pads and you are all set. Use the 6.5's for the large areas and the 4" for the tight areas and pillars. It takes all of about 30 seconds to change the backing plate from one size to another, very easy.

I really don't think the 5.5" pads would give you any more then 10% but I don't know.:dunno:

Use a 12/3 HD cord and you are fine. I did not buy the $30 extra long cord. I don't think it's any heavier, it's just more convenient. The short cord works fine. I'd Save the $30 and buy the 4" pad set up IMO.

Hi Mike, so does AG have a new LC 5" bp? I've been thru 2 already and now using a meg's. Even the 3M isn't worth c@*p. Thanks

I was thinking the same thing! Btw I haven't received any pads from Megan but she did say she would help me out on setting up a kit with the things I want!
