52 GMC "patina" Look Help

Trust me on this. Buy a can and do a fender. If you like the matte finish (and will have a degree of protection) do the entire truck. Please let me know how it goes.
 
If you've ever seen that "Fast and Loud" show on..um...Discovery or History Channel, shot at the Gas Monkey Garage in Texas, they had a car with a "patina" like that, and they shot clear over it, as some of the other posters have suggested. I love the truck...like the current look. But if it were mine I would take it down to bare frame and and work my way up and make it look like it did when it was sitting on the showroom floor. I would keep it 100% stock...but I would have to make it look like new.
 
Keep nostalgia alive! DO NOT DO A THING TO IT....besides the few washes a year!

There is no way this thing is getting restored. Its fun to use. If it had a perfect paint job and body, I would feel very guilty dumping rock, dirt, sand, and wood in the back;) Its fun to putt around in. 50MPH is the very top end. 45 is just fine and will get me around the side street here no problem. I drive it usually once a week if not more.

a few years ago it literally paid for half itself. Our main car got hit and spent a month at the body shop; hood, fender, door. They polished it for me, even though I asked them not too many times. Well luckily the didn't do much damage. I had a true pro do the work. He did a great job there all day and the price was very very reasonable. Thanks to this site I was able to ask all the "right" questions and see what he did. Step by step he followed everything here. Anyway sorry for the side story: But I drove it as my daily driver and bypassed the rental car from the insurance. They gave me the cash either way:)

Thanks again fella's. I figured this would be the right place to ask. I will be funny to see me driving this in the rain and having water beading up on it:xyxthumbs:

It's too bad they don't have full episodes so you could see the car when it was done, but they say in one of those clips they are going to spray a flat clear on it so that the car is washable and to lock-in the look.
 
Don't Change anything in the driveline. It is VERY HARD to find something ORIGINAL anymore. Fix it up gradually starting with the interior. A seat re foam and the chrome pieces polished up would look good. Plus you don't haul rocks in there.:laughing:

Love that show.

I think there was an episode of Trucks! on the Powerblock were they did this. I think it was on project "Classix"? Anyways, they recreated the petina look and I think sprayed a flat clear over it. I'll have to see if I can find that episode later.
 
Thanks again fella's. I think I am going to steer clear from the clear coat now.... Sorry couldn't help it;) I just don't want it to start peeling off. I haven't had cable for 5 years or so now, but I remember seeing a video of the guys on trucks? that did a patina look. but they basically recreated what time did to mine. Turned out pretty cool I thought.
Thanks for all the help looking forward to trying out some of these tips. Life is way busy right now, I hope to get some time to do this. I will for sure post up the results!!!
 
Well to update this thread here:
So I painted my truck! Yes I painted my truck.:eek: Not to worry it was Matte Clear:cool: I just got the front done, everything except the bed.

I started off with a green scotch pad and some CLR mixed with water. Then washed it, then got some acetone and did a wipe down. Then went after it with some rattle can matte finish clear. All went fine except the end of one can when I was doing my drivers door decided to dry before it hit the paint! Yeah it was warm and windy. So I have a few hazy streaks, but hey it adds to the character.

My main goal here was to keep the surface rust from becoming a problem, as my truck sits outside now. Really all you can tell is that the rust color is less, thanks to the clr, and the color is darker and more uniform, thanks to a bath. So here are the "dramatic" before and afters;)

Now to finish the back doing the same method. I did try the pledge thing and it did work great. I liked that. I just wanted to get some paint on the bare metal spots.
 
Close, I did put a matte clear finish on it.

To update, The streaks have started to fade in and go away. It sits out in the sun until about 2PM every day so I'm sure that helps back the paint on.

I still need to do the bed. I will get some pics up of the difference between the two. Really glad that I did this! It was just want I wanted!
