Guys I am new to the forum and have a couple of questions. Here recently the hood on my 69 camaro popped open on me while driving.
Needless to say it broke hinges, bent the hood, and dented the driver side fender. I have painted quite a bit before but had only done a little detailing. I have been "lurking" the forums for quite some time trying to load up on information.
So I got about 4 good heavy coats of clear on the hood and decided to wetsand with my 3/16 's DA sander with 1500. I followed it up with 3000. I purchased 3m's Perfect it system which includes there compound, polish, and ultra finish ( for removing light swirl on darker colors). I also purchased Dewalt dw849 rotary polisher. The polisher come with 6 pads. 1 Wool and 5 waffle pads ranging from heavy cut to final polish.
I started working on a test section with a the heavy cut waffle pad, compound, and about 1700rpms on the polisher. I proceeded with the polish, light cutting pad, and same rpms of 1700. I finished with final polish pad, the ultra finish, and about 1300 rpms.
Upon initial inspection it looked really good.(The sun had already set) When I applied a high power light I noticed lots of lines/scratches.
So I redid the test section with the same exact procedure above except this time I started with with the wool pad. I the test section twice with the compund and wool and then finished with the other products. Upon final inspection it removed alot of the scratches but there are still scratches in it.
To wipe off the product im using two general microfiber towels. One for the intial wipe and then one for a final wipe.
Im gonna try to take some pic to show the scratches.
I guess after all of that my question is. What step am I not doing right? I am being super careful with wool pad and compund. You can feel the buffer and wool pad has quite some bite. Thats the only thing I can think of is that im not getting out all of the scratched from the 1500/3000 sanding because they don't appear to be "SWIRL" marks.
Any help would be greatly appreciatedl
