Orange peel is common on almost all vehicles from the factory, some worse than others and more common on mass produced vehicles as opposed to specialty brands. In any case, it is not exactly a desired trait in vehicle paint. Many people live with it, some dread it much like myself and the owner of this beautiful Interlagos Blue BMW M5. We both felt that the excessive and very noticeable orange peel on this vehicle was taking away from the true depth and effect of this particular color. Definitely had a dull appearance to it, not to say the car was by any means boring, but the color needed to pop more than it was from the start.

Over the course of 95 working hours, due to various reasons, I was able to level this paint, polish it back and really unleash the true Interlagos from the paint. The pictures, which I've narrowed down to just 45 of the 400+ I captured, definitely show the process and improvement. My own jaw dropped when I pulled her out in to the sun after three weeks, as well as the owners. See for yourself!!

The car had the usual defects, swirling and marring as you can see in these sun snaps, the following group of pictures really show how significant the peel was in the paint.

The more I captured the peel on this car, the more I got antsy to get rid of it, you can see just how rough it really was below:

After nearly 9 hours of prep work, everything from full degrease, wash, ironx, wheel removal and removal of grills and other body items that would have been in the way, the car was then masked up as you can see here. When it was all said and done, this M5 took 3 full rolls of green 3M tape and one roll of blue wide tape...rip guys!

The paint readings were taken with the highline gauge and we found a range of 130-860 micron depth.

The sanding process was indeed a process, I used a combination of DA sanding and mostly hand sanding on this vehicle. Starting with 1000 grit, followed by 1500 grit, then 2500 grit...all to be finished with 3000 grit before polishing it back...heres the end result of the fully sanded vehicle. The hood and roof alone were a combined 5 hours! Talk about taking your time...

After approximately 20+ hours of compounding and polishing, the paint definitely looked the way it should under various light sources. These pics were taken before the vehicle was prepped for the ceramic coating it would receive.

Quick snap of my knight in shining armor that will be protecting all my work!

The following pictures are all post sanding, polishing and ceramic coating photos. I did the best I could to capture the true depth and color that the Interlagos blue really has, and to show the orange peel completely gone. This M5 is in its right state now!

WOW! great job correcting & coating the paint surface on this BMW. The M5 looks amazing. Keep up the great work

WOW! I don't know what else to say. 180° turn around.

Nice work! Now that is how an $85,000 car should look! Love that color too! :props:

How much material did you end up removing?

Your photography skills match your restoration skills on that work of art. Your expertise turned it into a treat for the eyes. To me it's just plain inexcusable for a car of that expense to have that much orange peel.

I saw at most a 10 micron reduction in the paint after words, but in areas with well over 300 microns to start. I'll have to put a list together of what was used when I can get around to it. Thanks for the kind words everyone!

thats one hell of a turnaround! wanna do my black grand prix come spring time? it needs it badly and people are charging way too much to do it. if i knew how to do it i would've done it the day after i bought it.

All I can say is "WOW" Oakes...

You never let us down when it comes to write-ups of your work!

You always show your processes in depth and clear shots of the dramatic before/after differences.

* 1 Question - When you sanded with the D/A, what machine/speed/pressure/passes did you do to get those kind of results?

I ask because I got a interface plate for my PC and 3M sanding discs and want to start using those for deep scuff, scratch, OP removal but don't want to cut too deep. I've been wetsanding by hand for years, but not by machine.

- TIA!

Thank you!!

Aj, to answer your questions...

I used the PC7424XP, speed 3-31/2 light to moderate pressure - NO leaning or pushing and in some areas took up to 3 passes to get it level. That was using 1500 grit paper, rest of the steps were done by hand.

You sir blow my mind. Your work is so ridiculously perfect, and professional. I only hope to achieve a fraction of the skill you possess.

Damn, How much yu charges for this? 20$ x 95 hours? Job look good but 95 hours is just way too much.

Thank you!!

The rates here are $55/hr...

I am impressed. I love looking at the whole wet sanding process from start to finish. Thanks for posting and keep up the great work.

GREAT results on a beautiful car!!

I need to get my hands on some product, and learn how to do this!

all i can say is WOW....this right here is the deffinition of auto reconditioning not detailing! f-ing beautiful man way better then showroom, just beautiful!..love the work you did and a great color!.im wondering would it be wise for a detailer who does this much work to put a sticker of the micron ratings before wetsanding and after wet sanding and a label to say "paint was reconditioned and removed xx microns of clear and has been polished leaving xx microns to safely polish" just for future owners of this vehicle? i think for a job like this it might help but some might think "oh its been repainted" when clearly you just fixed the flaws that it left the factory with? i think if more detailers added a decal like that it will help the future detailers out by knowing what was done in the past....let me know your opinion on this as im starting to get stuff together to do detailing/auto reconditioning(focus on the reconditioning) i just love to restore something back to better then showroom condition. in my opinion detailing is detailing and auto reconditioning is what you have shown, which is bringing car to look better then show room condition. again great work and better yet the check you got afterwards $5,225!!!! if i could get one of those a month id be ecstatic!
