95 Mustang detail nightmare

Hey everyone just thought I would share a little work I did on this 95 mustang convertible. I get a call to do a mustang from someone who got my card from a good friend of mine. He says it’s a convertible and they want a full detail minus a headlight restoration. We go over the what he wants done and get it booked. When he drops it off the top has all kinds of issues due to the installer not doing a good job at all. And to boot the car is in terrible shape. I was a little surprised they wanted me to detail it with the condition of the top but :dunno:

I knew I had my work cut out for me as this is how it looked all over with many deep rids all over and other random scratches from years of neglect it looked liked in some spots they had dragged a dirty heavy box over the car when it was dirty..[/SIZE]

I knew it was gonna be a rotary + wool pad kinda day


To me it seems to me that wool pads don’t get talked about to much on here and I feel it’s a shame because they really are a awesome tool when you know how to use them. There is many times when this is what you need to get the job done for a super heavy defect removal like this. When using wool its important to know your limits and how quickly you can cause damage so you have to be on top of your game at all times and focus on the task at hand.
Here we have a test spot to see how things are cleaning up.




There was a big long scratch on the hood I wet sanded out with 2500 wet dry then followed up with the same process via wool and 105




 


Did a little test spot on the bumper. As they were extremely faded I knew the chances of bringing them back were very slim but I tried my best.





This one shot of the interior should say it all.


 


I washed and decontaminated the car and began the long day of cleaning. I didn’t snap to many during pics cus I was really moving along.

Now for the final shots. It is not perfect and there is still some deep scratches but it is 100,000 times better than what it was.






 






As I was wiping off the wax I had to snap some pics of the hood. A huge difference of gloss and reflection after the 18 years of neglect

 




Getting crunched for time I decied to use Meguiars micro fiber finishing wax

How long did it take you? Amazing job! Rotaries are super fast from what I have seen in some videos. Meguiar's has an official video showing rotary + restoration creme combo on a super abused taxi mini van. They take it from that abused condition to nearly perfect in 20 minutes from what they say... is that true I don't know but what I do know is that if I had to do the same job with the Meguiar's DA, it would take me at least a day.

Maybe I should look into Learning the rotary. Problem is I have no idea where I can do that around here. Not gonna do it from watching videos, all I have read and seen so is very explicit about being a very dangerous tool to use. But in good hands it can do miracles so eventually I will have to dive in.

Also an other question. That gazebo (or what ever it's called) that you are using... can you set it up alone. If so how long does it take you? And finally where did you buy it?

Thank you so much Calendyr! it took me about 10 hours to detail the car and the paint took about 6. I do agree that it will take forever with a DA. If you know how to use the DA I think you would pick up a rotary faster than if you have never polished paint before. can you find any body panels or ask someone with a car that either the paint has clear coat failure in one area or faded paint (a POS.. in other words) and ask if you can practice on their car. and the pop up canopy can be set up by yourself and i got that one from my dad but you can find them at hardware stores or on the internet in all kinds of sizes.
 
Great Job!, yeah I agree with you with Rotary's and wool pads. I like that combo a lot.

To me they are a lot easier to use then a DA, mostly because of my lack of experience using a DA.

I did like the Flex 3401 because of the forced rotation however. So will be getting one.

I am planning on downgrading my PC to a Damp Sanding tool, for paint and or headlights.

After sanding, I then would switch to my Rotary for buffing out the sanding on headlights.

And for paint I'd use my Flex 3401 to remove any holograms, mostly for jet black paint (if It gets to the point of sanding) but for metallic like silver the finish comes out nice using a Rotary IMO. But then there is the Denim pads to remove the orange peel for repaints.

So many option :D
 
Nice save!!! It feels good when you do a car that is in that shape and you bring it back from the dead!
