This may be a dumb question, but I can't figure out for sure if the backing plates that are under 4" can be used with a 7424 or just a flex/rotary. Can you use the smaller pads with a regular DA, or are the for Flex/rotary ?

I'm pretty new too detailing so I am probably not the best person. I'm sure others will chime in but I have a 2 3/4" backing plate and I have a da adapter that screws into the backing plate so I can use it on my PC.

You can put this adapter on your Porter Cable to accept rotary backing plates. But I would just stick with a 3.5" DA backing plate and 4" pads.

Here is the link.

D.A Adapter 5/8" X 11

There are also smaller rotary backing plates (different from DA backing plates) which allow you to use smaller pads.

This is a perfectly good combination. Very good for sanding/polishing headlamps and working in tight areas with 3" pads.

Kevin Brown aka Buffdaddy dot com has a very nice selection of Mirka backing plates that are awesome on the DA...no adapters needed. ;)

+1 This is a better way to go. There are other brand 2 3/4 DA backing plates also.

I use a 2 3/4 in Da BP on my PC frequently. No problems. The head of the buffer is a little big and bulky compared to my Griots 3 in ROP. However, the power the difference makes it well worth it. In particular, I like using the PC/3inch Megs MF DA combo. Works great for small areas.

I would probably use more 3 in foam on it, but, the choices in 3 in pads are few.

What's the deal with the Griots 3" machine if you can use 3" pads on any DA then? That's part of my confusion.

Smaller, lighter and less power. Better suited for spot repairs in tighter places. I like doing headlights with mine.

Adequate power for 3" buffing/sanding pads. Not enough for 4" tools.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I was able to get the 3" LC backing plate and pads from AG. Hope this helps buffing small areas. I hate trying to use a regular pad on a tiny area. I try taping of the trim, then the tape peels back a little and adhesive from it gets on pads and paint. I recently tried the green "super sticky" tape over the blue(think 3M makes it?). Anyway, the extra stick comes from more gummy adhesive on the tape. It ends up smearing on the paint and is hard to get off. IMHO, the blue tape is better.

me too; got them on order; don't plan on using them for another month or two though

do you need to change the counter weight or leave the 5 inch weight?
