About 6 weeks ago, an old friend from High School contacted me on Facebook and requested that I come to his high school to give a talk to his students about detailing. He teaches at a vocational school and he runs the Auto Shop program and they also have a body shop program as well. These are mostly "hard luck" kids who would probably be drop outs if it weren't for schools and programs such as this.

I agreed to do it and put together a power point presentation outlining detailing, polishing paint, correcting defects, tools, pads, polishes, etc. It was an hour long presentation and I spoke for about 35-40 minutes and then did a short practical demonstration showing a 2 step process on the fender of a swirled F150. The kids didn't fall asleep on me so I figure I did OK. They have a co-op program at the school, so maybe one or two may be interested in trying out working in that field. I've got a friend with a shop that might be able to help in that regard too. All in all, I was happy with how it went. Here's my ugly mug in action (I usually try very hard to avoid being on this side of the lens, LOL).

Thanks for looking.

Good for you, Richy. I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but is it different in CAN than here in the US? At least around where I live, almost all of the Voc schools went away with the manufacturing. I would be fall over surprised if there were any shop classes today at the (traditional) high school I went to.

Good stuff there!
Thank you

Awesome job, way to give back to your community.
Thanks kindly.

Well, it's a small program, there's just a few hundred kids in the school for all of the combined programs. Both my wife and brother are superintendents in the school system and I know there are big differences in the education program between Canada and the US.

I'm not sure I know what I'm talking about. I'm sure there are some regional differences here in the US, and it seems we still have some dedicated Voc-Ed high schools around here, but the post high-school Voc schools (that are still left) are all supporting the service economy (HVAC, Auto, Telecom) vs. manufacturing like they did back in the day. So bottom line is we DO have programs here like the one you have pictured.

Anyway, as I said, good for you for helping out.

That's really cool of you rich to do something like that. Also who knows might of sparked a kids mind. Wish they had more stuff like this when I was in school or vocal. I'm only 22 and slowly got into but already have a lot of years exp.

Also like my dad says it's good to know if you ever have to fall back on something you know.

Totally agree with you, and, thanks!

High schools down here offer the detailing classes.Nice of you to devote your time and effort.

Nicely done, they could not have had a better teacher. :dblthumb2:

Excellent way to spend an hour for sure! Kudos .
Maybe it's the trainer/teacher in me or something but, I love the opportunity to teach someone our trade - especially when they're genuinely interested in what I'm saying! :D Did the kids ask questions and even ask if they could use the equipment?

Very inspiring and cool!
Thank you Paul!

Thanks Steve! No, they didn't. I've always enjoyed teaching (adults) too. I've actually got a fellow 'Geek coming from 8 hours away in a few weeks to spend the weekend with me to see how I do things. I'm looking forward to that.
