I just wanted to post a little tidbit that may help someone else out.
I live in a small and fairly rural area. About two weeks ago I emailed someone at my local area newspaper about starting up my detailing for the area, and my services that I offer.
Yesterday in the Sunday edition, she printed a short 2-3 paragraph "article" under the "Local Business Briefs" heading, along with other local business news such as insurance agent licensing news and new realtor members, etc. I've had several people mention they've seen it in the ad already (people I know) and I already received a call, which led to an appointment this Saturday.
I'd say most newspapers have things like this and accept "press releases" of new business start-ups, certifications, awards, etc. Anything to keep your name out there, helps! And best of all it's free. It also lets me know there may be value in placing a print ad with the same publication.
To capitalize on this free publicity/promotion, I'm providing a prize of Free Auto Detail to my radio station to giveaway in a drawing at our local fair that started tonight. They also do a prize wheel, but I don't offer any services for $5-$10 and I think it would be a disappointing prize to have to pay to use it =) I also work at the radio station p/t, so they're great to work with.
Cross-advertising in this manner can be effective, when someone maybe glances past a print ad or just kind of catches the end of a radio spot, then see another ad in a different media type, their mind makes a connection and hopefully puts your business in their "Top of Mind" awareness.
