Just wanted to drop by and say hello. I really enjoy making cars go fast. I like to take them and restore them one bolt at a time. I really enjoy pulling up at the light with an old beat up looking car and running a low 11 sec pass. This has been fun and I do still enjoy the beater look, but I would like to make my "turd" shine a little.

It all started with a little turtle wax rubbing compound, some maguiers gold class carnubea wax, clay magic, some clay lube, and a few autozone applicator pads. The shine I was able to put back in the paint with these products literally had me wanting more.

I started by researching and reading. Eventually Autogeek was continually showing up in my searches so I started watching some of the YouTube videos. I was then drawn to the website and its wealth of information. I have started to formulate a purchase and I am torn between the Dewalt 987x and the Makita 9227. The Flex is a nice machine but far more expensive for the rotary beginner. I have also been eying the LC Hydro Pads but am also torn between this and the new hybrid technology. I have heard some not so good reviews on the CCS pads so I have looked at other options.

This is how my car beautification adventure has began, I am just looking to make it a successful adventure instead of a $400 Horror story. Any advice, links or suggestions will be greatly appreciated and if you are interested in looking at the car build, here is the thread. This will be the turd that I am trying to polish.

Hi Robert,

Welcome to Autogeek Online! :welcome:

Whatever it you want to learn, we can help you. If you're interested in either the DeWALT 849X or the Makita Rotary Buffer, check out my recent article on this topic.

DeWALT DWP849X vs Makita 9227C Rotary Buffers

I would recommend adding a DA Polisher like the Porter Cable, Megs or Griot's DA Polisher to your rotary buffer purchase because it's the easiest way to key word, ensure a swirl free finish on ANY paint system plus I'm a big fan of doing everything by machine including applying waxes and paint sealants by machine.

Show Car Garage Video: How to pick the right polisher

I would check this video out too just because it clearly shows the differences between the three different styles of drives for the most popular buffing tool.

Just scanned through the link to your write-up for your Eagle Talon build, very impressive.

You do a very good job of taking pictures and documenting your work, that by itself is an art form.

I remember when these cars first came out, they were very impressive...

I've resized one of your Talon pics to 800 pixels wide and uploaded it to your gallery here on AGO for insertion below...

I can appreciate all the mechanical work you do, I'm more into Big Block Chevy engines and 4-wheel drives but it's all good...

Unbelievable build thread for the Talon!!! Wow man - if you're not a master mechanic yet, just show a shop that thread and you'll get a job for sure. I'm impressed. Hell, I get worked up when I think about changing my own oil. I can't imagine doing everything you did to get that motor and trans rebuilt like that. Welcome to AGO. :props:

just came from your DSM post... truly incredible/painstaking work... i'm sure you're very proud! i wouldn't consider you a newb by any stretch of the imagination (makes me look like a toddler in a car-seat!). cheers robert!

@ Mike, Thank you for the welcome and for the outstanding online database that you and your company have put together. I called and spoke to Ray the other day about these polishers and another gentleman on the tech line about the LC Hydro vs Hybrid pads. You all really do provide outstanding customer service from what I have encountered and that seems to be a hard to find attribute these days.

I appreciate all the links to help guide me in the right direction, but it seems I have already read/watched them before signing up. :dblthumb2: Your companies YouTube channel is what drew me to this site and your online store. With that being the case, I watched a lot of your videos in the process. I also read that review on the polishers right before I signed up. That is the article that somewhat put me on the fence. The rubber guard and shielded breathers seem to be nice additions to the Dewalt but I have long been a Makita fan for some reason. As far as the DA polisher, I do plan on adding the Porter Cable (The starter kit looks nice) to the arsenal sooner or later when funds allow. I know that the rotaries can do more damage but they can also do things that the DA's can not. For the time being, I will have to learn how to get buy with the Makita until I can pick up a DA to aid in a true swirl free finish.

I can appreciate all the mechanical work you do, I'm more into Big Block Chevy engines and 4-wheel drives but it's all good...

This made me laugh because the talon is AWD :dblthumb2: Have to get 30 PSI of boost to the ground somehow!!!!

Lastly, Thank you for the Complement on the build, my picture taking, and taking the time to re-size a photo so that I can add it to the Gallery. I learned everything that I know from other people who where willing to teach me and I am trying to return the same favor to others. The first motor that I ever built was a 5.0 HO 302, so I have ventured a little in that direction too. I picked up the Talon and once I felt boost, I was hooked and have been a boost junkie every since. Another V8 could be in the far future but it will be boosted :)

@ Meghan, Thank you for the Welcome it is much appreciated.

@ Lokerolo, Thank you for the complement. Believe it or not, they really mean a lot to someone like myself. I started changing the oil in cars about 9 years ago, so I was just like you. If you can change your oil you can build a motor. It just takes a lot of patience, a lot of tools and a knowledge base (Knowledgeable person or reading/online).

@mageA1, toddler in a car seat!!!! Thank you for the complement. I may know how to build a car's mechanical portion, but from some of the pictures in the build thread you can see that paint work is not my best forte. I plan to improve that with the help of this forum.

Thank you all for the wonderful welcome, and I hope to see everyone around.

Robert
