A virus Killed my old computer.

Im not gonna get into a flamewar.

But macs are just as vulnerable as windows based machines. The key difference is that virus coders target windows due to the much larger user base.

Im using windows 7. I built my computer 4 years ago and also, have never had any problems just like you. All it takes is a little common sense when using the internet.

I worked at staples as one of their techs and all the virus removals I did could all be attributed user ignorance.

What you're saying is contradictory! Part of the reason Macs are definitely not as vulnerable is because, just as you said, there are not as many in service, so more hackers write code for Windows.

But there are many other reasons that Macs are better- If you don't need Windows to run a specific program for work, Macs are the better choice for the average person. And I'm basing my opinion on being a long-time Windows Microsoft Professional and working on them and finally buying my own Mac and realizing that they just run better and are easier to use.

I'm not saying they are "better", just that they are the better choice to use if you just want a reliable home computer / laptop, and you're not into working on them.

And DEFINITELY, Dave and anyone else not doing so already, use a separate, remote backup hard drive!!

You said you were in Buffalo for the weekend but is that where you live? I'm actually in Rochester and do computer work on the side. If you're in the area I could definitely take a look at it for you and see if there anything that can be pulled off your old drive.

EDIT: Nevermind I see your profile says you're in PA.
