So I finally have a Flex 3401, and I'm about to order the LC 4" changeable backing plate, but I also am not sure which color 5" pads I should get if I'm going to get the 6 pack. Right now I'm a weekend warrior, doing my own cars and maybe a car or two for other people on weekends here and there. Any suggestions of what to start out with?

Congrats!

If getting a 6 pack, I would grab three blue light cutting pads and three white polishing pads to get started. Later on you can pick up more pads and different colors depending on what is needed based on your paint.

What polishes will you be using?

Do you think the orange has too much cut for most applications?

Yes. The orange Hybrid pad is the most aggressive foam pad offered by LC. Even more aggressive than the standard yellow cutting foam.

I missed the question about the polish. Right now I'm using Menzerna FG400 and PF2500, and occasionally Sonax Perfect Finish. The Sonax PF seems to work extraordinarily well on Subaru paint.

Hi fotomatt1, I'm in the same boat as you. I was up late last night looking at the pads and reading up on them as I have a 3401 on the way. I was going to get a 4" LC backing plate and the 6 pack hybrid 5" pads. I was thinking one of each, minus the gold one. I'll be following this thread regarding the suggestions.

I'm actually just waiting for another AG sale to order them. Autopia has a sale but they don't have 6 packs of pads....only individually, and even with the 15% they're more expensive.

Only if you're trying to get a feel for what the colors are like, because one of any pad isn't nearly enough. I consider 3 of a pad to be the absolute minimum.

Personally if doing the 6 pack I'd do Quantity 2 of them and do 4 Orange, 4 white, 4 Black.

Get 2 orange, 2 white, 2 black. Ideally I'd get 3 of each.

Thanks guys. Pretty popular consensus. What if the cars I do really don't need any correction? Still get the Orange? or substitute something else?

Well looks like today's the day with the sale. I'm going to get two 6 packs, and go with 4 orange, 4 white, 2 blue and 2 black. Sounds like a good selection?

If you really have zero intention of any correction I'd probably swap orange for blue.

Unless I am mistaking my shopping cart, Autopia does have 6 packs. They are in my cart now. (Not sure if they are priced any differently.)

Right now, 6 pack on AG is $65, but $59 on Autopia.

EDIT: I see that is for the 6.5 inch pads, not the 5.5 inch pads.

And let me confirm Mike's observations...

When i switched over to the hybrids i considered staying in the colors i was used to from the traditional pads i.e. orange, white and black. Having much more experience with them now i would forego the orange and would get whites and blacks or blues. The orange offers me serious cut and quite honestly surprised me a bit at first. I still use them on really hard, tough, scarred up jobs but don't need any more. I wish i had...and will soon...more whites and blues.
