About to polish my 06 Vette with Menzerna SIP and Porter Cable: Please Help me Answer

Re: About to polish my 06 Vette with Menzerna SIP and Porter Cable: Please Help me An

We are certainly all aware of the omen in owning black cars, and the requirement in owning a Black Vette to keep it clean. Most are certainly from the Corvetteforum were we sponsor the car care area and have for many years.

I did a small write up you might like on detailing to help with some hints. Its old so please forgive me that other newer products are not included.

When using the rotary on the vette I will tape around the side mirrors in case the pad hits the mirrors and along the doo trim. Also put a couple towels across the cowl.

cool...just bought all the rest of the stuff i'm going to hopefully need.

so my plan is start sip white pad, then go micro polish white pad, micro polish blue pad....2 coats wax. if this fails i sell all my detailing stuff and take it to a pro..haha

Re: About to polish my 06 Vette with Menzerna SIP and Porter Cable: Please Help me An

cool...i guess i'm gonna start with the hood. although it's the largest, it seems to be the least curved and with no tight areas to work. i actually think i may practice on my girlfriends 98 ford ZX2 pos which is also black. also, do you any of you guys use the metro air force master blaster to dry your car? i bought one and can't believe the water it blows out of tight spaces. it still leaves a fine dust film though it seems which i have to wipe with quick detailer (i love the turtle wax kind, i've tried a lot of different kinds and it seems to work best on the black vette). god someone would be rich if they could invent a washing system that left absolutely no water spots and no need for drying.

also do you guys tape off sections with painters tape, or just try to do a 2ftx2ft at a time and overlap a little on the next section??

oh yeah i'lldefinitely get before and after pics and post them, just have to get camera batteries. will start probably on wednesday if my stuf fgets here quick like it did last time from autogeek.

Well you can get the cr spotless system and it will dry without spots. I would never allow the water to sit on my cars that long though. I use compressed air to blow all the crevices. No need to tape out an area, just overlap, no biggie.

:iagree:

I use a leaf blower in place of air compressor however. You should see what a 40.00 Leaf Hawg offering 200 mph air can blow out of cracks and crevices.

update:

so I got all my stuff in the mail this week and started the process last night and this morning. i started with the hood, which probably has/had some of the deepest scratches on the car. let me start by saying i was very worried about doing this but it seems that it's almost impossible to mess up with the porter cable. i had one scratch that was more than fingernail deep, and afer two or three times with theorange pad and sip its still there, but i can't believe how diminished it now looks. it seemed to take out light swirlseffortlessly. i can still see some light scratch marks, but ike i said i'm not looking for absolute perfection. after sip orange pad, sip white pad, micro polish blue pad it looks awesome to me. i'm gonna try to tke some pics later today in the light, but i'm very impessed what menzerna andthe pc can do even in the hands of a complete newbie such as myself. it literally seems close to impossibe to mess up...at least on my corvette clear coat.

Re: About to polish my 06 Vette with Menzerna SIP and Porter Cable: Please Help me An

sounds like you are doing well, cannot wait to see pics.

Re: About to polish my 06 Vette with Menzerna SIP and Porter Cable: Please Help me An

I've dealt with a few Corvettes over the years and never had real good success removing swirls/light scratches using a PC due to the paint's hardness, but it sounds like you are doing fine. If you are happy that is the bottomline.

I typically use a Flex DA and start with 106FA or 106FF with a white pad, then go orange as necessary and then back to white. I use SIP for spots only (4" pad using UDM or PC) and often stop when I've got 85-90% correction for fear of removing too much clear. I then finish with a black or blue pad and 85RD.

Congratulations on your success.

i just took acouple quick pics in the garage. my camera isn't great, and i have yet to snap some outside....but i think this picture best illustrates the improvement thus far (i waxed both surfaces so it's an even comparison). man does my lower back hurt though, trying to polish the middle of the hood and the front fascia i can't take any more today.

Glad to hear and see you are getting decent results. The true test is when you take it out in the sun. Keep up the great work and you will be rewarded.

Re: About to polish my 06 Vette with Menzerna SIP and Porter Cable: Please Help me An

Looks good. In my garage I use halogen lights and a Fenix light, but as was mentioned sunshine is really what can show light defects even better...IMO.

Re: About to polish my 06 Vette with Menzerna SIP and Porter Cable: Please Help me An

well, after spending about 3.5 hours on the rear hatch area, i've decided i'm really only after light swirl and light scratch removal. ihave noticed that no matter how careful i am, somehow there are always a very few light scratches left after polishing. it seems to remove almost all swirls after two passes of menzerna sip on the orange pad. i tried the white pad with sip and a good dealof pressure with slow motion and it didn'tseem to touch it. i also found that for some reason after i followed the sip orange pad with sip white pad, then micro polish white pad i'd get those very tiny micro marring spots (little miniscule almost hook type ones). i followed it with micro polish orange pad and it seemed to remove them. i don't know if this is absolutely wrong..but i think at this point i can't expect perfection. i'm pretty happy with the results even in the sun. i just know i'll probably never buy a black car again as long as i live...silver all the way!!!

There is something on the pad causing the hook shape in the paint. Just keep up the good work and take some sun pics when it is done.

Re: About to polish my 06 Vette with Menzerna SIP and Porter Cable: Please Help me An

i dont want to start another thread, but i have one question: when using sip, if the orange pad isnt working (assuming you go over it twice) do you move to the pfw or do you try a yellow pad first?

Use a pfw pad or better yet get a full wool pad.

Re: About to polish my 06 Vette with Menzerna SIP and Porter Cable: Please Help me An

thank you dana, are you talking about this guy right here?

Foamed Wool 6.5 x 1 Thick Polishing / Buffing Pad
Yep that's the way to go .I hated the orange pad switched the PFW and it was alot easier to use.But then again i first used the PC on my vette and wasn't happy switched to the rotary with PFW that was the way to go.i never tried a PFW on a Pc
