Abrasives to Color Sanding

Many people I have spoken to have varied opinions on this question. When do you determine that abrasives are not adequate and the only option is to color sand? For me I always start with an abrasive to see how the paint responds. I will color sand based on those results, others say they go about it differently. To be more specific there are obvious times when you know that color sanding is the only option. These are those times when you need to determine the course of action for those borderline imperfections.

In some circumstances, if the defects are too widespread and compounding them will take a lot of time, sanding with a higher number grit will make it easier to get a uniform finish and also one that actually is safer in the right hands than a heavy compounding step. When that option is used is a case by case basis. Some people consider the speed at which they can make uniform defects (Sanding) as opposed to trying to level all different levels of defects (Compounding).

I have done the former and can say that the final finish was achieved at a better state in a faster amount of time, leaving more time to refine the final finish.
