Hi, Last year I purchased this 82 911 SC and the paint looks ok but I was hoping to improve it. The water spots just won't come out. I have tried clay, vinegar etc. I tried compound with a MF Cutting pad on DA polisher. There is definitely an improvement with a richer look to the paint but when you look at the right angle the water spots really pop. I don't want to re-paint the car, would you have any suggestions. You can see from the photo that the reflection is good but you can also see the nasty stuff when looking near the light reflection. Thanks in advance. Dan

Looks like you would need to wetsand, but being a 1982 that may not be a good idea. Is it single stage paint or base/clear?

Hi, Thanks for the reply. To me it looks like single stage, But! I am not an expert. I think I will correct as much as I can and the find a good shop in the area to take a look at it.

Take some compound on a light colored microfiber or white terry cloth and work the paint a little. If it's single stage you'll see color on the cloth.

Or if you already saw color on the microfiber pad it's single stage.

Single stage confirmed.

Do you have a paint thickness guage?? Single stage paint is usually pretty hard which would make it a little safer to wetsand if you need to. You also need to consider the age of the paint. Have you ever done any wetsanding?? Where do you live maybe a member on here could give you a hand.

The single stage paints I've done I've used a rotary and wool pad which should take them out, but again if this isn't something you've done before you might cut through the paint.

I've found the opposite to be true, single stage paint has always been very soft IME. Accordingly, I've never had to use a roatary on SS paint since it's so soft.

I do not have a paint thickness gauge. just an enthusiast here. I will start talking to local shops to see what I can find out.

The majority of Porsche 911 paint is very soft and delicate. I would advise against wetsanding. I know Mike and a few others have vast experience polishing out air cooled porsches. It is my gathering that in general you want to focus on maximizing the gloss and be prepared to know that you are not going to get all the defects out. You will be able to diminish their appearance, but they will still be there. I work at a Porsche Dealership and we have a collection of air cooled 911's, I can certainly confirm this.
