I have a TORQ R5 Dual-Action Backing Plate 3" that i would like to use on my polisher and the trouble is i have a 5/8 arbor and the backing plate looks like it has a m14 stud. Any help on how to make the connection work? I don't want to use a drill adapter on the backing plate. Or would i be better off and safer to buy a 3" polisher instead..

There are adapters to let you use a rotary backing plate on a DA, I have never seen one to allow use of a DA backing plate on a rotary.
That's your problem BTW, it has nothing to do with the size of the polisher, it's that DA's and rotaries use different threads (rotary has 5/8-11 male thread, DA has 5/16-24 female (generally).
