Adding clear to existing faded clear?

Hey folks

Just wondered if its possible to sand a clear coat enough to make a new clear coat stick properly?

The clear coat is fading quite a lot with the Queensland sun here in Australia and wondered if it is possible to rough up the old clear coat enough to apply a new one?

I have already sanded with some 1500 grit foam pads on a Shinemate Dual Action polisher (speed setting 3) but its leaving quite heavy "shell" looking marks I fear may show through the new clear coat.

Any experience or suggestions?

I can't answer the question about topping up the clear coat, but I did see the some 2000 and 3000 grit foam sanding discs at Supercheap Auto when I was wandering around there the other day, so you could smooth it out some more, they're available in a couple of different sizes. I feel your pain, I've got early clear coat failure on the bonnet of my FJ Cruiser, at the moment it's hidden under some Plastidip.
 
Wow, someone did this here or at Autopia 15+ years ago, I remember it being a gold colored car and he did the front fenders, but I don't know how to find that thread.

I was told by my painter buddy that as long as the clear is still properly adheared to the base then you can sand and respray clear. But if its flaking off then you need to sand and respray base coat first.

To bad that fella 2black1's wasnt still on here, as he was a painter and used to give his advice on these subjects.
 
to Big Dave, Setec Astronomy, Bunky and opie.. Thanks so much for all your suggestions. All have been very helpful! I will have a good read of the links provided along with watching that youtube video. This definitely seems the place to ask before rushing in and potentially making mistakes.

I will keep you all updated with how it goes :)
