Hey guys, do any of you do PDR(Paintless Dent Removal), wheel repair from curb rash, ect.? I've been looking into learning how to do PDR and wheel repair. But the place I found around me that teaches PDR makes you sign a non-compete contract before they teach you. And all the other places would require a day worth of travel, a week in a hotel room, price of training, buying the equipment, ect. on top of the money lost from missing work. I just can't afford that. This winter I'm going to try to repair some curb rash on my wheels and see how that goes.

Then theirs the option of just buying the training DVD off ebay for like $8 but I feel like it would be really hard to learn that way.

Anyone have any experience with services beyond just detailing that they also offer?

i dont have experience offering those services, however i have done some PDR research, and the best way to learn is by someone teaching you, im the type who can learn stuff very easily just by watching someone or reading, however pdr is one thing i would pay for a good teacher. so what i would do is find a local PDR trainer, there should be one around. sucks but you will need to take off work unless you have a friend thats doing pdr. hell call up some PDR guys and ask where they got there training done at. cant hurt to ask. as far as you doing the curb rash repair, its not too difficult just depends on the method you want to do, some people use a putty with ground metal bits in it to repair(almost like bondo) then repaint. some will hook the wheel up in a lathe(depending on damage) and shave the road rash down. or some even will weld new metal in place. just remember you cant just paint the area you repaired you will need to respray the whole wheel.i would either focus my efforts on PDR or other services. you could offer clear bra's, offer window tinting. if you do end up doing wheel repair you could offer wheel repainting services(ones who want factory wheels blacked out ect). just do alot of reading about all you can do.look into trade schools some might offer PDR. good luck with the additional services you want to offer
 
Paintless Dent Repair is a craft and an art form...

I've watched people do it before and it's definitely something you have to have talent for to be good at it.

There's a difference between being able to do something and being good at it and that's what I mean by when I say it's an art form...

The best way to train is with someone else that's a master at the craft and has been doing it for years...

Also there's the Mobil Tech Expo coming up in January and there are classes on all aspects of PDR as well as detailing and other subjects.

I found a local place that does training but they make you sign a non-compete contract before you take the class :(

what exactly are the terms of this non-compete contract? that makes no since how you would be "competing" with something like this as so many cars get dents. some business make no sense when it comes to training"sure i will train you but you cant compete with anyone" any business there is competition even if its across the country.im betting more people are curious of what the non-compete contract entails.

That contract is as useless as the piece of paper it's written on. What is going to do? sue you? and what judge or anyone would go against you for trying to make a living? Will you be taking his business? or just a part of YOUR EXTENDED detailing?
Just my opinion.
 
non compete means you won't open (in this case) a pdr business within the training company's trade area.pretty much common sense,as you wouldn't be competing for the same CUSTOMER as shoeless or anyone not in your town.
