I only need the price of a ($16) sponge to get to free shipping.
I just read over that nickel thread from over a dozen years ago, some names from the past that don't post here anymore. It's funny, unless I'm remembering someone else's story, I did go into one store where they had the stuff and it was a manager-type at the cash register and when it rang up at a nickel he said he couldn't sell it, that when it is that price they are supposed to get rid of it.
For anyone that doesn't want to read the thread I linked above, the Cliff's Notes are, someone went to Advance Auto and they had some Meg's Final Inspection and clay and Trizact sanding discs on the clearance rack for half price. He thought that was a good deal so he brought them to the cash register, but they rang up at $.05 each.
I guess these were products that didn't sell, so they put them on clearance, and after some period of time of still not selling, they decide they are going to scrap them, or give them away to their commercial customers. Since they IRS won't allow you to value any inventory at zero, they give them a "scrap" value of $.05. So the events took place after Autozone globally changed the price to $.05, but before the stores were told to scrap them, or at least before the stores got around to doing it.
Some of us got $30 gallons of Final Inspection and $25 jars of clay for a nickel each. It seemed since so many stores had 2 of each, that was what was allocated to each store, and since they didn't sell all season, they decided to dump them.
