affordable paint meter.

Unless you've spent thousands on a ultra-sonic film measurement gauge that has the capability to differentiate between various substrates... all you will - EVER - get is total "film" to metal.

Depending on the surface you are measuring and the paint system that was used sometimes even the ultrasonic "multi-layer" gauges will only be able to measure total thickness. On metal panels this is especially true because the substrate is too "noisy" for the ultrasonic sensors to differentiate each layer accurately... especially with thin OEM paint.

:iagree:
Unfortunately I'm not one of those that can afford, nor do I need a $4000 PTG. Just don't do the type of work on a weekly basis where it would be needed. Yet if I did... you can BET we'd have one before the first buffer left the bench. ;)

Which was my point, saying that anyone that buffs paint day in - day out.... SHOULD have at least SOME sort of PTG.

I was just about to post a thread on this as Black Friday is approaching and I would like to take advantage of some savings on a PTG. What exactly makes a Defelsko PTG (their cheapest $600 model) worth the $200ish more than a Highline PTG? Is it purely their reputable name?
