AIO Before Sealant?

Good morning autogeek!

Today I am performing a full detail on a 2012 VW Passat TDI. The customer wants me to apply Simoniz System 5 to the paint for added winter protection.

I was unsure about one thing... Being a synthetic teflon sealant, would Megs Cleaner Wax (Burgundy bottly) work as a prep stage? Or should I go with something like Color-X or Fine cut cleaner?

My idea is that the wax content within the cleaner wax would interfere with how Simoniz bonds... BTW, PC7424XP for prep and hand app. of Simoniz.

I have a few hours before I begin with the paint. Anything would help.Feed back please

Hi Chris,

I don't have any experiance with the Simioiz System 5 you mention but a quick look on the Internet tells me it's not a very good product. If this is what he wants then I'd use a straight cleaner, wipe with mineral spirits or an IPA solution, then apply the Simoniz product..

Meguiar's Cleaner Wax is just that, it cleans the finish and leaves behind a little wax protection. Meguiar's Color X is also a 1-step product that polishes and leaves some wax behind.. Both of these will stain plastic trim and rubber seals to spend some time tapping them off or avoid them completely..

Wash
Clay
Clean or Polish
Seal or wax

But I thought that the Simonize System 5 was a dealership applied product...
Backed by some sort of 'warranty' or the other.

I digress.

-Evidently...You have espied some paint-blemishes on this VW, and want to clean them
up some (AIO-style), before application of this sealant-'system'.

-Your concern over bonding-issues may be alleviated by staying within a manufacturer's
car care product-line---"synergistically speaking"<<<(M.P.), that is.

-Although it's been a while since I have used anything Simonize...
I would bet that there are several OTC Simonize cleaner-waxes (AIO's) to choose from.

Just a suggestion.

Hi Chris,
The Teflon "system" is a bunch of hooey! Teflon only bonds at temperatures above 700 degrees, it's a dealership sales pitch that requires further "maintenance" every six months.
When I'm asked to use an owners products I'll tell them that I spend a lot of time researching the products I use to provide the best for my customers and would prefer to use my products. I can't do a class A job with class D products. That said, I don't turn away work, just advise the customer.
