air filter

Hi all I own a 2004 Audi with less than 30,000 miles. I have never cleaned the air filter. Should I clean out the air filter or buy a brand new k and n one?
 
If you want a cleanable one, skip the K&N and look at Amsoil EAA air filters. If they make one for your car.

Otherwise just replace it with a normal paper one like you would get from the dealer or auto zone. These ones aren't cleanable, you replace them like evey 12k miles.
 
I was referring to if Amsoil made one for your car. The K&N's aren't worth it IMO. I have one and I'm tired of cleaning it. I'm getting rid of it in the spring.
 
I fine with cleaning it, So I would just pop the cover off and take it out and clean it like so ?

No offense, but they way you type your post has me concerned a little about what you're doing or what you think you are doing.

That video shows you how to change the air filter. You would be replacing it with another OEM paper filter or a paper filter from Fram, STP, etc. that you would find at Auto Zone, or get from an Audi dealer. You cannot clean an OEM type paper filter. You have to replace them after a certain amount of time.

K&N filters are cleanable and are known as oiled filters. They use a cotton type material. The oil is what catches the extra dirt that their material would not. You clean them by washing it with K&N's cleaning solution and then you have to re-oil it. If you over oil it, you run the risk of ruining the filter and ruining parts of your engine.

The Amsoil filters are a nanofiber material and are oil-less. You clean these with compressed air or a vacuum cleaner. I see now though that Amsoil does not make the filter I was referring to for your car.
 
that would be a better option, I dont want to deal with more oil stuff

Chris, the one he posted is an oem paper filter.

Bill, Mann filters are the best paper quality for your German sedan.

I know that, I thought he was asking if it was the filter I was referring to. Which it wasn't because I was referring to the Amsoil Ea air filter, not the Mann.

If smack says the Mann filter is great for German cars, then go with the Mann.

Well how far off would you be putting the replacement if you dont do it now?

If the current filter is dirty/clogged, you are starving your engine of air. Think of it as somebody holding a rag of chloroform over your mouth as you run away...... You won't get far! And neither will your car if you don't do proper maintenence. Replace it NOW

I probably should do the replacement now as it has never been changed. I will also look into upkeeping my engine

Well, you can blow it out with compressed air, but that would be in an emergency, you should really listen to smack's advice:

Eh...more of an issue back in the carb days, if you have a FI engine with a MAF, you'd really have to be clogged to "starve" your engine.

Follow the manufacturer's guidelines, usually air filters are 30,000 miles. Look in your Owner's Manual.
