I have a 2004 audi a6. Today as I went downstairs, the car alarm went off. I did not see any signs of a break in as nothing was broken. I am wondering what could cause the alarm to just go off like that.

A cat jumping on the roof, your neighbor bumping into the car, a malfunction, an earthquake, a bomb going off, a sonic boom, someone driving by thumping Lady Gaga too loudly, an act of God.

That about covers it. Sometimes mysterious stuff just happens. :xyxthumbs:

Is this the factory alarm? Back when there weren't too many factory alarms, many aftermarket alarms had motion sensors (I guess primarily to go off if the car was being jacked up to steal the wheels or winched onto a tow truck) which tended to make the alarm go if a big vehicle drove by, gust of wind, the aforementioned cat, a pedestrian bumping the car walking by, etc. I'm not aware of any factory alarms that have that feature, however.

Possibly...An unearthly, ground-shaking event...

I have an after market alarm and it goes off about 2-3 times a week.

I went out the night before, I guess someone knocked out right by my keys and wet my remote, that unlocks my car.

I woke up in the morning and noticed it was wet but wiped it off an went to Target with my lady that morning (errands)

When we were walking back to the car. I guess the water got sucked into the remote and it didn't want to turn on. (Because it was wet)

I opened the door with my key and the alarm went off. While the alarm whaling away. I tried to turn on my car.

"Click, click" was all you could hear. The kill switch did it's job and didn't turn on the car.

I then called numerous people including AAA.

I then got the idea of using the hand dryer in the restroom to try and dry it off. After a walk back inside the store and into the restroom. From the parking lot.

I tried blow drying it and yep, the remote went back on. And "VROOOOM!!!" My car turned back on.

There is no moral to this story, just be happy that your car is safe.

Even driving slowly in parking lots, my headers and short exhaust pipes have set alarms off. It is embarrassing, but I've learned to live with it :o

Could also be a back ground :dunno:

Car almost 10 years. If one of the body ground developed some "crud" over the years, it may be enough to have a weak connection that intermittently it makes the alarm believe that someone is trying to disable it? Does it happen often?

A couple possibilities I know of:

1. Did you have your key in your pocket and something else in your pocket just happened to hit the alarm button?

2. You do have motion sensors, they are located on the B-pillars, there should be a button at the base of the b-pillar that can be used to shut it off if you need to trouble shoot the problem. The sensor could be going bad, but this is pretty rare.

3. Most likely: The switch or wiring on your door lock assembly is failing. The car thinks the door is open even when closed and since the vehicle is locked, the alam sounds. This is most commonly the drivers door since it is used the most. If your LCD isn't completely pixilated, it would show the door open icon even when the door is shut. Another symptom of this is that the dome light comes on and off while driving. The car will also beep at you frequently since it thinks you are driving with the door open. Swap door lock assemblies with someone to diagnose and check the rubber boot between the door and the car near the A-pillar, this is where the wires fray and fail. You will have to remove the window frame to access the door lock assembly, there are a couple adjusting shims that you should mark before removing the window frame.

couple things

1. Not after market alarm
2. keys were in my pocket
3. I turned the car on it went off, then the alarm went on again.
4. I have had a transmission sensor dried out as the right passenger side had water in it recently
5. The dashboard screen is somewhat faded, not alot, just things arent as clear

I had it happen in my Subaru. A passenger shut the door on the seat belt causing a small dent on the inside of the door where it hits the little button that registers when the door is shut. The slightest movement would cause the alarm to go off.

Meanwhile, in the 2012 Family Ford edge, the horn went on full blast, wouldnt shut off and smoked out about 6 months ago

An alarm going off every now and then is really no big deal and almost to be expected. Previous posters have already mentioned a number of everyday things( loud car speakers, loud car exhaust, thunderstorm) that can cause factory and aftermarket alarms to go off. So this is really only a issue if it happens frequently.
I am not really sure what you are getting at about your Ford Edge.
Hope this helps.
