All new Lincoln mkc

I guess we got off topic a bit, but the idea of "packages of options" drives me nuts. I remember when we ordered my grandparents a brand new Olds Delta 88 coupe. You could just go down the list and order what you wanted on whatever model you wanted. That being said the salesman checked the wrong box for the Vinyl landau top. The car was supposed to be burnt orange with a matching top and interior. Instead it came out with orange paint and interior and a green top. Needless to say it had to be redone.

My way of looking at it is this. Fords should be able to get a la carte items where needed such as preformance or leather . However, Lincolns should get more of a base luxury mid luxury and upper luxury and then a la carte items.

Well packages are great, really. Great way to get a bunch of options on the cheap. Like the Sport package on the focus. Painted wheels, two tone seats, rear disc brakes, fog lights, a spoiler, for $995, minus a couple package-specific discounts and incentives, and I got all that around $300. It's mostly appearance with some function, but a well spent $300. A la carte the rear disc alone would've been at least that much

BUT, I should be able to choose additional things beyond that. Wheels for example, are all tied to packages; why can't I just pick the ones I want? Leather seats, climate, even cruise control (though that's standard on the SE model) are all parts of 'packages'. There were VERY few a la carte items. A keyless entry keypad, a couple of accessories (like locking lug nuts or a car cover), and a sunroof. That's about it. Everything else is packages!

But then, maybe I wouldn't have gotten it for the price I did if they didn't streamline production by using 'packages'. Although personally, I suspect it's marketing. For example, the rear disc brakes. I would've bought those a la carte. I also would've paid the entire $995 for the package for them. They are worth it to me. So they know that one item can be used to lure me into buying things like two-tone seats that I probably wouldn't have bought. The aforementioned climate control is a good lead to 'upsell' MyFord Touch and Leather. But instead of upselling, they just tell you if you want it, you have to buy the other junk...

Its 2013, almost 2014 and rear disc brakes are optional and not standard, crazy!

I agree! It's a Focus, not a Bentley, but drum brakes are ugly and a pain to maintain. Disc brake pads are super easy to change out. Drum brake shoes are a pain in the rear. And in a year or two the drum itself will be rusty and nasty looking.

The Dodge Dart doesn't have A/C standard. Crazy!

Of course, motorcycles haven't really even had FUEL INJECTION until the past couple of years, and ABS is a rare availability on only a few bikes and usually an option.

I agree completely. I would love a Diesel focus with the 6 speed manual transmission. For Ford though, I think they are just looking at what sells. Americans don't like manual transmissions, diesel engines, or forced induction (unless it's on a sports car).

I'm the opposite. I think the small, forced induction engine is a brilliant solution in an economy car, I think a manual transmission is the way to go and I cannot fathom for the life of me why we are so glued to the less-thermally-efficient, more-refined gasoline over Diesel fuel?

But as it is, I had to special order my focus just to get the 5 speed manual, as nobody had them in stock. As my salesman told me "It'd sit on the lot for months. Nobody buys them with a stick anymore". So people routinely pay $2,000 (which is what the auto costs on a Focus) for a less reliable transmission? Insane! I prefer a manual anyway though I suppose I'm biased.

Chevy is finally bringing the Diesel to the cruze. But apparently, their marketing Gurus have decided that the ultra-efficient engine isn't for people looking to save on transportation costs; it's only for people who want the top trim level with navigation and leather seats. Now, I'm sure that's because it makes the Diesel engine look less expensive. But I'm sure there are some who would like a mid trim level car with a Diesel!

Kind of like the MT on the Focus. There were a couple of base models (steel wheels with hubcaps, crank windows, etc.) with a MT at another dealer. I guess they figure they better have some in stock at 'starting price'. But when you want an SE Sport, a middle trim level (not even at the top!) people look at your like you're sick when you tell them but you still want the manual transmission, lol.

Oh I could go on. And it's not just Ford. Want white tape stripes with your red paint? Sure, but you can't have the black interior anymore. Why? Dunno. Because the computer said so. Want climate control on your new Focus? Why, yes, yes I do! Okay, but for Climate Control to work you first have to add MyFord Touch, leather seats, an appearance package; oh, and you can't have those rims you picked out AND Climate Control (true story), and it'll be $3,800 in addition to the $795 option you picked. Agh! Why can't I just pick what I want when I'm special ordering a car? (And no, that wasn't going up a trim level, it literally was a requirement to have the SE Appearance package, which had different wheels, and another package that included leather seats, AND the MyFord Touch package, BEFORE you could have climate control).

Funny you mention having to special order your Focus. I most likely would have but I lucked out and ONE dealer on all of Long Island and NYC had a ruby red with the black pack and full body kit. I was so glad to find it and the price was nice.

I really would have liked a touch screen radio on my Focus but there was no way I was opting for MFT. I've read too many horror stories about it and was not going to deal with it, have enough issues with Sync as it is.

I agree with you, Americans don't want small fast cars, just big engines in cars that are aimed at the high performance market. If the Focus RS did make its way to the US it would probably be popular among Focus and Ford enthusiasts only, can't really see too many wanting to shell out upwards of 30k for a Focus. Would have been nice to have the 1.6 ecoboost from the Fusion in the Focus for us that didn't want the ST but still wanted a bit more performance than the 2.0 Duratec.

Focus RS coming over here costing upwards of $30k???, the ST, loaded, is about that, so an AWD version w/ more power and brakes is going to be approaching $40k, the Shelby Focus is a little over $40k, wonder how many of those you'll see around, probably as many Saleen Focus' you see, LOL!

That's just it though. Smaller cars are all the rage in other parts of the world where gas is far more expensive, you have to drive in crowded cramped cities and in traffic. Save for those living in NY, Chicago, or LA, most of us drive in suburban or rural traffic, and have enough room to park a bigger car. For a LOT of Americans, $30,000+ for a hot rod Focus, or $30,000 for a Mustang GT makes the Mustang sound a whole lot better.

I am a Focus lover. However, if I was spending ST money, it'd be the 'stang hands down.

I didn't really want MFT either btw. But I did want the automatic climate control. I'd also like remote start but Ford won't put that in a manual transmission car. Other makes will, though. Using a sensor in the transmission to ensure it's in neutral. Parked in the flat spot it parks at when I'm at home would be no issue leaving it in neutral with the parking brake on, and remote start would work wonderfully (along with automatic climate control that'll keep the fan off until the engine warms up, then automatically kick on the defrosters, hehehe). Oh well!

I'll tell you this, if I lived near the mountains, I'd take that $30-40K Focus RS all day long!
