Am I a "Detailer" Can I refer to myself as a "Detailer"

I was recently told via PM, by another Forum Member the I am, "not a detailer"

The reasoning given was that, what is "on your paycheck" determines what you are

First off, I consider that statement wrong, no matter who writes your paycheck. That has very little with who you are. I am a Salesman, but my favorite title is Uncle Kyle to my nieces and nephew


Although it is not my sole source of income, I do get paid to detail. I usually, average 2-3 cars a month

I have attended the Meguiar's 101 and Advanced Courses, many Thursday Night Open Garages and worked alongside others, like Art Hernandez, who I consider to be "Detailers"

I have studied the available works of Mike Phillips, Jason Rose, Mike Stoops and other respected industry professionals. In person and online

I have not just followed the AGO Forum, but used it as a resource; reading every single thread that was ever started by Mike Phillips.

I have shared honest representations of my work on the Forum, both to continue learning how others would approach the same challenge and to show what I have learned

I have a business Facebook page and even business cards


What do I need to do before you can call myself a "Detailer"?
 
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Don't sweat it.
 
Who cares what others think? If I did, I'd probably be pushing a grocery cart around downtown Orlando right now.

:iagree: However, I would like to change detailer to "artist" Our technique and the way we make a car shine is all that matters. Whether we get paid (I don't as I do this for a hobby and for only me, my relatives and close friends).

My payment is usually a dinner or Lotto Scratchers.

allenk4 I do not consider you a detailer; I consider you an artist! Art Hernandez is an artist, Mike Phillips and every one that loves to detail artists. That means almost everyone here on AGO. BTW, many artist do not get paid.

If anyone knew what I really did for a living you would laugh. It is completely the opposite of detailing! Detailing is my stress relief!!
 
I don't ever remember reading the "my paycheck defines me" rule. We are all so much more than what the paycheck says.
 
And by the same token, just because someone calls you something, dose t mean you are........

This Is a detailing forum, there is not requirement for membership. No tests are given and some member might be posting from the psych ward (with me). We get internet time you know lol.

So relax. Enjoy your wax, sealant, coatings or whatever and take the good advice and consider the bad before you dismiss it.

Kyle, I've seen what you did to that black SUV. You're a detailer and a really good one! I don't get a paycheck any longer since I'm retired. Does that mean I don't exist?
 
Mike Phillips had a great posting not too long ago about detailers, one category being "enthusiasts"; but right now it's midnight, I'm tired and I can't find it. Anyone with a bucket of soap and a can of wax can claim to be a detailer. In my mind, a professional detailer is less about what's on your check and more about what you know and the quality of your work.
 
Another funny thing...My paycheck doesnt say a WORD about what I do at the place I work. HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!! What a maroooooooon!!
 
Awh geeze . . . . i kinda thought i was a detailer & i also thought i detail for a living . . . i'm far from rolling in cash, does that mean i am a detailer or not!? How much do i need to make before i can be a detailer???

While I am paid by a power generation company, one of my passions is "washing cars", as my wife calls it. She says that in jest because often people reach out to me and will ask if I'm the one that washes cars, and will I wash theirs. I always reply with yes, I am. Yes, I will. I don't touch a car for under $250, your price may be much more. I keep your car for minimum of 3 days, maybe up to a week. If you agree to my open ended price and time, I'll "wash your car".

I'm not a professional detailer, I'm an enthusiast. I'll also build you an engine if you like. I'll fabricate suspension if you wish. Or I'll wash your car until it looks the way I am happy with, inside and out. But, I am not a detailer. I'm something else, I'm OCD car cleaning, paint polishing, engine and chassis scrubbing, interior scrubbing nut job that will point his mental problems at your car for money. And people want to give me money much more often than I want to take it.

But, I'm not a detailer. I'm a power generation employee.... right?
 
I am a full- time career firefighter. Some of the career guys I work with do not consider volunteer firefighters "real professionals" because they do not get paid for it. I absolutely disagree with that thought. The career and volunteers, at least here, go to the same training. Just because you may not do it full- time or receive a steady paycheck does not make the individual any less.
It is all on how the individual conducts themselves. I know many volunteer professonal volunteers. I guess I would liken it to folks going to Mike Phillips training sessions. Some may do it full- time and others not but aren't they all there receiving the same training and continuing to better their skills? Sure skill levels maybe different just out of the sheer fact of having more correction time. With that said, it would not surprise me at all if two vehicles were put side-by-side and I could not tell who the paycheck detailer ws and the "non-paycheck" detailer was.
 
So Mike Phillip's paycheck says director of training.....does that mean he's not a detailer?

Kyle, I may not like the tone of some of your posts, but I can absolutely respect the knowledge you have and strive for. I can respect your abilities to make a car look good. I can even call you a detailer.

If it matters at all, I am a professional engineer. I did not get that title from a paycheck. I got it from hard work, experience and passing some challenging tests. I don't know why the title of professional detailer should be any different, sans test.
