Am I a "Detailer" Can I refer to myself as a "Detailer"

Yes, you ARE a detailer! Period, end of story. In my opinion, anything beyond a car wash every once in a while (maybe cus the weather's nice) and a once a year wax is generally a "detailer". Some may argue that a detailer is much more than that but i would counter it with anyone doing more than that including every d*** one of us here has a passion within them to go further towards enhancing the look...both inside and out.

I have long ago stopped considering what others think i am or am not. I know what i am and am very very secure and comfortable with that.

And i, as well as you, also have that passion within.

And of all the people here that someone would say is NOT? Allenk4? Seriously? That's outright laughable.
 
Kyle, I remember the work you did on the tailgate of the black SUV. That was top notch work. I wonder if the writer of this pm could do the same, being a "detailer". I enjoy your posts and more often than not I agree 100% with your opinions and comments.
The wrong thing to do would be to to post this persons name. But, I still have to wonder who?............
 
Okay, okay, okay, enough already...
All I said was you can only consider yourself a detailer if you:
1. Bought expensive wax
2. Learned that Armor-all sucks, (except the tire coating)
3. Washed your car in the middle of the night
4. You hide your detailing purchases from your spouse. Boxes bee-line straight from the porch to the garage.
 
Would a rose by any other name still be a rose? - a little Shakespearean approach to the subject. IMO the problem with society is that too many people need a title or a label to feel like they fit appropriately into a position in society. You do what you do and you are what you are. I am a very matter of fact individual(ADD plays a part in that) so I analyze the definition and meaning of things. That causes me to categorize things and sometimes label things to the point I'd rather someone or something just be known by his/her/its description rather than a label that can have several meanings. That said, someone like Allen IMO can be known as an enthusiast detailer for the sake of not giving someone(like the member that PM'd him) the impression that his profession is a detailer, which is what the title/label means to many of us here. It's kinda like someones kids calling you Uncle but, your not actually related to their family through blood or marriage. It doesn't mean you can't hold the position of actually being an uncle to someone's children. The most important thing is, that no one can take that title or position away from you as long as you live up to with those children. Another, thing that came to mind as soon as read that a member PM'd Allen to tell him he's not a detailer was that ego seems to play to big a part in what titles we give ourselves, or think others should give themselves. I don't know the details(no pun intended) of the PM but, seems a little rude and egotistical to me. Allen, do you want to be called a detailer?...
 
IMO you may have PO someone and they knew what to say to get your attention. This is a pitch in the dirt, and I would not swing at it. I have learned much from your posting .... Keep it up, don't throw in your wash mitt and go to the scratchomatic just yet!!!

OEM Industry
That would be when your car is being manufactures and at some paint if their is a problem with the paint the car is moved off the assembly line to what is called a polishing deck and then "products" formulated for the OEM industry are used to fix the problem.


Refinishing Industry
This is your local body shop and custom paint shop, for example after you wreck your Honda the body shop installs a new fender and paints the fender to match the car or like Max, you take your classic Mustang convertible to a Custom Shop and a guy like Wayne Carini has his guys rebuild the car and then spray a custom paint job on it. These two types of business are the "refinishing industry" as they are "re-finishing" the car.


Detail Industry
This primarily includes "Production Detailing" but also includes Show Car Detailing, we have both types of detailers on this forum and they use products formulated by just about everyone.


Enthusiast Market
This is the guy that just wants to take care of his own stuff, he's a do-it-yourselfer. Often times the do-it yourselfer does as good of work as a Pro Detailer that specializes in show car detailing and even better work than you can get in the re-finishing industry and the simple reason for this is he cares about his car and thus his work.



There are companies that make products for just one category and companies that make products for a few categories and even some companies that make products for all 4 categories.

Well I can honestly say I am not a detailer. I am a stone mason by trade on cape cod.
Without a doubt I am an enthusiast!
I joined the AG world because of the inspiration I get from guys like Mike phillps, art hernandez, and so many of of you senior members on this site.
In my mind though, when I'm cleaning my truck or my bike I am a detailer! Most of you guys have forgotten more about detailing than I'll ever know.
From what I've seen and read from the senior members on this site I would have to say that you are detailers to me.
Again keep the inspiration coming!
 
I agree 100% with streetglide12. Ok, maybe not 100% since I am not a stone mason. I work at a desk (IT/DevOps manager), but used to get my hands dirty full time as an automobile tech as well as robotics repair.

One of my passions is maintaining our "motorpool", not only from the mechanical maintenance, but also the aesthetic side, which includes washing, cleaning, polishing, etc the rides. It is my creative outlet, but I don't do this for a living and my body probably couldn't take it anymore (I have gone soft from sitting at a desk too long).

I come here to learn from the best. I like to watch the videos, oogle at the pictures and read the various reviews of products and explanations of techniques and some of them I get to try out on my own cars/motorcycle.

I can honestly say that while I am not a detailer I feel like one when doing it.
 
Sounds to me that whoever PM'd you with that comment has their nose in the air thinking they are superior to all others. I have no room in my life for such snobs and to them I say "PPFFFTTTT!":close1:

• I accept no one's definition of my Life; I'm the one that defines myself.

• Defining myself? This Jeffersonian-adage/ideologue comes into play:
"If you want to know who you are:
Act! Action will delineate and define you".

• Sure as shootin': We can surely make a living
by what we get paid;
-but, can't we more surely make a Life by what we give?

Accordingly:
-We are all here on Earth to help others; what on earth
the others are here for...I don't know.

• I used to be a "Detailer", but I drifted.

• I still like detailing. The idea. :)

Who cares? That person (and any of us here) aren't paying your bills or feeding you.

Take your money that you make from "not being a detailer" and enjoy it.

Too much talk and drama on these forums lately and not enough show 'n shines.

Hey, you must know Don Cyr! I think they live in Sagamore. Say hi from us, Francesco and Brigitte in Montreal. We haven't seen them in a few years as we haven't been back to Aruba in a while.

Back to the topic, I'll echo what you said. In my mind I am a Detailer when I'm doing it, and I'm always trying to learn more.
 
Opinions have been expressed, and this thread does not contribute to AGO in a positive way. We're shutting it down.
