Am I claying too hard?

Oh well then that explains it... I only use the Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay on vehicles with the most minimal amount of contaminants possible... My own. Lol.

You might want to step it up. That clay is too mild for what you’re asking it to do. Get yourself the Meguiars Clay Kit at least. Or you could step up to the Meguiars Mirror Glaze Aggressive Pro Clay. I would recommend the Medium Grade Nanoskin Clay Mitt, but a claybar gives you a better indication of when you’ve officially removed all contaminants because you can visually see that you have based on what the clay looks like. Otherwise you could just get the Med. Grade Nanoskin Claymitt. It works.
 
Those black spots may be from sitting under a tree. I used to park under trees and wash my vehicle weekly and those spots would show up. The first time removing them is a PITA!!! I actually recommend a cleaner wax or tar remover. The cleaner wax did a great job and didn’t take that. At the time I used meguiars white wax. This would be my recommendation. After just seal your cars paint and try to wash at least weekly and they will wipe off with no problem.

I’m going to buy some c2100 clay and get some tar and bug remover. Unfortunately I can’t ship aerosol so have to look for a pump spray I will let u know the results. I will also try and get some pics of the paint too. Thanks for all the help guys it’s awesoem to get such good advise promptly from lots of people.
 
The Pinnacle is the mildest clay I have ever used. Get the Blackfire clay mit. Great price.
 
Yep was looking at either the BLACKFIRE mit or the meg c2100 clay. Any thoughts? Seems silly to get both.
 
This is a pic of the roof untouched and cleaned. I have just focused on the Bonnet yesterday.

Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay is an ULTRA FINE clay and as others have said, using a more aggressive clay will work faster as will a more aggressive clay towel or clay mitt.

What’s your preference on the pad vs clay?


Plan now is to use a woolen pad as the clear coat is very hard prob use mez power polish then finish with a white pad 203 then Wolfgang sealant. Thoughts?

I will eventually try a ceramic coat after I have gone through my sealants.

So that’s what it looks like after you’ve washed the car? In that case you’re going to want to go straight for either the Medium Grade Nanoskin Claymitt or the Aggressive Clay such as the Meguiars C2100 Professional Clay that you’re thinking about getting.

This is how my paint looked when I 1st bought my car used. This is after washing and claying once with the Med. Grade Claymitt. [as you can tell there’s alot more claying to do]

I’ll tell you right now, even using the more aggressive clay it’s still going to take a good long while before you’re completely done decontaminating it.

This is what it looked like after I was done fully decontaminating the paint.

I had both the claymitt and claybar at my disposal and found the claybar to be more effective on paint in this condition. Go with the Meguiars C2100 Clay.

I would also recommend pre treating the paint with a bug & tar remover during the wash process in order to get the paint as clean as possible before claying. These are a couple products that I find effective.

As far as the machine polishing, [compounding] while it’s true that an aggressive approach is likely, I wouldn’t necessarily go as hard as wool because there’s a chance that the paint is wearing a bit thin after such a longtime of neglect. I found it to be a case of needing to go aggresive while still keeping a least aggressive approach in mind... My solution was microfiber pads for cutting, followed by a polishing step with foam polishing pads.

That’s before a wash. I only really concentrated on the hood of the cars as it was taking so long I had to just focus on oe area.

I only have a das polisher so won’t be too harsh. Just using a orange pad and power polish on my golf did nothing. It’s like diamond coated paint.
