I have an 05 330i. I formerly owned an 02 Nissan Altima. The Altima is still in the family with my son. The Altima had 4-5 recalls, which was annoying, but after that, through 180K, very few repairs, and the repairs were not expensive. My BMW has been decent, but more repairs and the repairs are more expensive. You have to decide if it's worth it.

I have two e9x chassis BMW's bought new and have not had any issues with them. They are rock solid vehicles.
I am also a mechanic (Air Force) and do all work required in my BMW's. For a repair manual pick up a Bentley manual. These are light years better than Haynes or Chiltons manuals. Also grab a Bavarian Technic scan cable. This will allow you to get into the cars computer and read and clear codes along with many other things.
