Any citizens band (CB) radio operators here?

What's the fog like in your 20? Not bad as I've seen, but not good for Dec. 1st

Figured it was too early to call. I don't know if I'll get a chance today, either way I'll have my modulator back by the 16th.

Didn't matter anyway as the big boys were sparkin fire on 26. Driver only had a barefoot 25 LTD...Volvo's are known for issues with their mirror mounts/grounding/reception.

Happy detailing...:autowash:

Doesn't seem to be foggy here at all. I'm still at the home 20. I'll be in the shop and keying up around noon time. You can call me anytime you like buddy. I naturally wake up at 7:32 am each morning. Thankfully my brain clock allowed me an additional hour this morning.

This whole thread is really a great read currently yet also a trip down memory lane. Many years ago when the CB license was required my oldest nephew had a "Big" (read illegal) radio and power rotating antenna on a huge mast. He absolutely owned all of San Antonio, all surrounding areas, and talked skip worldwide depending on conditions.

One day multiple vehicles drove up to his house, showed their badges, and confiscated everything. They even dismantled the tower! It was a big stink, he got fined, lost all equipment, and was banished from operating any CB. This thread reminded me of that....."Edsel" was gone from the airwaves forever.

That's a bummer. I've seen it happen to a few operators who were running obscene power. I had a good friend who went by the handle "Mongoose", he was constantly running 10,000 watts through a rotatable 4 element beam and would broadcast every night, a talk radio commentary on some pretty controversial subjects. The Feds rolled in, confiscated a truckload of radio equipment, slapped him with a $10,000 dollar fine and in the process discovered some other under the radar operations he had going on.

Sadly in the end.."mongoose" was found in his bed a few weeks later with a self inflicted fatal gun shot wound. That was a sad, sad day for a lot of people.

I don't think the feds bother much with 11 meter communications nowadays unless an operator is doing something ridiculous that is causing trouble for other people who might call in and complain about it.

I just ordered a 102" SS whip to set up a mobile unit in my van. I have that little 29 hooked up to a fully charged car battery, connected to my Imax in the shop and am told that the little unit is blowing smoke barefoot with a Diesel noise canceling mike. It should make for a good mobile rig.

That Astatic is soooo sexy. She's got to be one heck of a mike.
Diggin the set up. Neat, orderly, well balanced display.

Those Diesels reminds me of the coast to coast runs where the RK-56 would act up, hit the sidebox and pull out the rinky Diesel $19 model...the good ol' days.Triple digit large car with a Union 76 microphone ~ LOL

Is there a battery in that Diesel mike?
One more Q?
What does Jack do when you key up? Any changes?

Thanks VT. That Astatic sure is sexy...I love the mic. It's the Silver Eagle version too...Woo Hoo!!!

For a cheap truck stop mic it seems to work OK. The feedback I get from other hands is that it has too much bass to it.

Yes it does have a battery and a gain control pot.

One more Q? What does Jack do when you key up? Any changes?
When Jack was a young dog in her puppy years, I used to run a Teaberry StalkerXX with a D-104 similar to this current Silver Eagle. When certain hands (big radio guys) would key up and talk, Jack would get her hackles up and bark like a coon dog.

When I first bought this current rig, I had it hooked up here at the house working through a home made 1/4 wave Di-Pole wire antenna that had just an OK receive and transmit, Jack never blinked an eye when I talked on it or when just sandbagging.

She hasn't been up to the shop to experience the current configuration, however...I believe she has the experience of an old radio dog and feel that she wouldn't be bothered by it at all. At her old age (16 years old this month) she's just too cool to be tricked by it.

Major boo-boo.LOL

LOL!!! That is real bad for him!!! I suppose some components may have been damaged during that arcing situation. What people will do for fun or bragging rights...

May I be so bold as to ask...What WERE they trying to accomplish?

I do realize a man made 'St Elmos Fire' wasn't part of the plan.

I could only assume that they were trying to run as much power as possible without burning the house down. Seems kind of silly to me but I can relate to wanting to be at the top of something. The one with the most power wins in a competition like that, so long as you go on to compete another day. I'd imagine the one that caught fire caused a lot of money's worth of damage to his gear. It's just hobby related fun until you've got to rebuild everything. Kind of like nose planting a $10,000 model airplane in competition.

My newest Mic.

Funny thing about running all that power in competition. I have a 100 watt linear amp hooked up that realistically swings about 60 watts PEP on the high setting and about 25 watts PEP on the low setting. I talk from Central PA to West Texas all week long on the low setting. So if I can do that on 25 watts, how useful do you think a 20,000 watt setup would really be? It's not much different than using a $2,500 wax on your car. Just so you can say you can do it.

Thanx Dave.

That was kinda what I was thinkin', but just wasn't sure.

Merry Christmas to you and Jack!

Thanks Bill!! A Merry Christmas to you and your family too my friend!! Jack was extra Merry last night when I brought home a 2 pound stick of deer bologna. I came in the house and sat the bologna stick on the counter top while she was sound asleep back in my (her) bedroom about 20 feet away. Within 5 minutes she was wide awake and sniffing below the counter top where the bologna was sitting. She wasn't even interested in her daily evening pig ear. We sat and enjoyed a little deer bologna together for her 16th birthday that's actually sometime this week.

I have a couple CB's, a couple in the house hooked up to a 21ft antenna on the roof and I have once cb in the truck along with an amplifier which pushs about 300 watts and a 6ft antenna on the roof. lol

WOW! Really wonder what freq(s) the ham in tape 2 was running. Those almost looked like 'cell towers' just by the looks of the tops.

Bill

Wow Dave...When I was a regular on here I read all your posts...I too have lost my way and I am now working to get it back...I have a mobile CB that was left to me by my Father-in-Law...It has been in a cabinet for years now but I remember listening to it before it got shuttered in the cabinet...My Grandfather got busted by the FCC for having too much power.

BTW that's a nice mike!
