What do you guys out there use and find really efficient for cleaning registries and optimizing computers? For now I have Registry Mechanic.

I have used a free program called CCleaner on several of our computers. It does a good job of cleaning out the junk and is quick.

Here's a dumb question..why do that..what's it do; what's the advantage?

Well, when you uninstall programs, there's some registry files that it leaves behind. Not everything gets deleted when you uninstall a program basically. After a while, there's a build up of registry files and it basically slows down your computer a bit. There's other things that leave registry keys lying around, and registry cleaners, well, cleans them up :D. There's also programs that optimize your computer, such as delete junk files if you choose so, optimize your internet speed, etc.

PhaRO, thanks for the program name. I'll be trying that out right now, I am super bored!

I use a program called TuneUp Utilities 2007 it's a great job it's not free but i got it off Torrentspy for nothing.

I'm not a big fan of Registry Cleaners and so called "optimizers" - Most are either non-effective or dangerous. I simply set-up a 2 drive configuration, one for the OS and program files, one for all my data (video, pictures, office documents, etc.). Every 6 months to a year, I pull the data drive out, reformat the system drive, and re-install the OS and programs. If I did it any more often, I would probably invest in a program like Norton Ghost, so I could save an image of system once everything was installed and set-up the way I wanted it.

For between re-install maintainance - make sure you have up to date virus protection and also run some type of ad-ware removal software, I like Adaware from Lavasoft.
