Any PC 7424xp cord mod?

Most of my cords are no longer than 50 feet and are 14 gauge copper wire.

Using my Porter Cable 7424xp as an example.

Cord Length - 50
Wire Gauge - 14
Load Current - 4.5 amps
Voltage Drop - 1.4 Volts

Cord Length - 75
Wire Gauge - 14
Load Current - 4.5 amps
Voltage Drop - 2.1 Volts

Cord Length - 100
Wire Gauge - 14
Load Current - 4.5 amps
Voltage Drop - 2.8 Volts

So would an 18ga cord be ideal for a 7424XP?

Thanks for the information Bobby - much appreciated. I know have a much better understanding of this.

How does one then calculate the ideal length (presumably as short as practically possible) and gauge of cord to be used in order to ensure you are not stressing the machine unnecessarily?

It's all about amps drawn from the machine... and making sure you have the right gauge wire and length combo for what your using. (See chart)
The PC 7424 uses 4.5 amps. Most guys want to upgrade to a 25 ft cord... at my local hardware store, they were having a sale on a few cords, so I ended up with a 14 g 30" cord. It's a good quality one with a soft covering, and very pliable.

For 25 feet, you really only need a 16 gauge to be safe, I went one step further... why not. The PC 7424 xp does come in a "HD" model with a 25' 16 g cord already hard wired, but if you have or buy your own cord on sale, you can save money for the sake of 20 min of work.

I live on Ontario, Canada - and I can't find the HD model at all, so if I wanted the longer cord, this was my only option.

Great info. Appreciated. Will use that chart for deciding on a cord.

Where abouts in Ontario are you? I'm from Perth County, just outside Stratford.

Brantford... about a 40 min drive from you.
Again, for 25' - all you need is 16 g, but I like to go "just a little more" then what I need, so 14 g. For $2-3, no point in not getting the next best right?

I'm near Brantford quite often.

Agreed. Far better off to spend a few extra bucks for peace of mind.

If you are getting an extension cord, just get a 12AWG it will power anything you can attach to an outlet a very long distance. Less drop is best for every device.

Just FYI, there is a rubber "sleeve" for lack of a better word where the cable goes into the PC (see photo) that I had a very hard time fishing through my 14 g extension... super tight fit. I doubt a 12 g would make it... unless you didn't plan in using it after your mod.

As it was, I had to cut the outer covering away to make it work, so about the first inch of the extension inside the rubber piece has the outside layer, the reminder going inside of the PC is just the wires with their own covering to the point of connection.

Try using a dab of two of 'dish soap' on both the wire and the rubber thingie. This will help things to slide together. Even a squirt of WD-40 works.
