Anyone interested in seeing this truck get buffed out?
Has a 1000 Horsepower Engine and a Candy Paint job...

Body styles like this can be a little tricky to work on so I would need a team of people to give me a hand...

:)

Looks like it might be worth my while to make a Florida road trip Mike. Sweet looking blown hemi there. Put some extra diet Rock Star in the fridge.

No doubt...

There's two empty cans out in the studio from last night's Camaro project.

This will definitely be a Saturday project... maybe as soon as next weekend on Saturday the 22nd

:D

I dunno Mike, it looks pretty shiny already...

I agree... but as shown by last night's Camaro project looks can be deceiving...

This is the true condition of the paint on the Camaro before we worked on it...

Check it out...

Pig Tails

If you look closely you can see a scratch that looks like the letter e in cursive writing running horizontally across the paint, this is called a Pig Tail and it generally comes from an abrasive particle that gets trapped between the paint and a sanding disc when machine sanding. The entire finish had Pig Tails plus Tracers randomly dispersed...

Micro-marring also called Tick Marks or DA Haze
The millions of tiny, small scratches highlighted by the Brinkmann Swirl Finder Light are caused by improperly worked abrasives when using a DA Polisher like the Porter Cable 7424XP, Meguiar's G110v2, Griot's Garage 6" ROP or Shurhold DA Polisher. These types of scratches are through out the entire car but you can really only see them on the black stripes not the metallic green paint. The point is that even though your eyes can't see them on the lighter colors they still cloud and dull the finish and keep you from seeing the beautiful color and/or metallic finish under the clear. These have to go!

RIDS - Random, Isolated Deeper Scratches
These types of scratches come from normal wear and tear and don't have any pattern to them thus the use of the word random in the description.

More information on RIDS here...
RIDS - The Definition of RIDS and the story behind the term...

Swirls and Scratches
What I see here is a combination of RIDS, swirls, DA Haze and Arc Scratches probably caused by wiping but they are also caused by improper use of a rotary buffer.

And just for the record, the nickname for the Brinkmann Swirl Finder Light is the Cruel Master because it's hard to please...

But in pictures it looked really good... these are before pictures...

Anything with an "early" blown HEMI would be worth it...if nothing more than to listen to it as you drive it into the shop. I had a similar engine in a pulling tractor a couple of lifetimes ago, but it ran on 100% methanol and put out about 2000 HP ( a lot at that time). It literally shook the ground as I hooked to the pulling sled.

Ahhhhh...the memories.

i want to see all your different tricks to get into all the tight spaces. these are all i get to work on. people dont realize how easy a new car is. jonathan

I agree 100%

Most older cars are actually easy but the ribbing around the panels on this truck and just the tight areas make it a tick more complicated.

This is why it's important to have both good machine skills but also the ability to rub paint out by hand using good old fashioned elbow grease...

WOW! that truck is beautiful Mike. I can't wait to see this in person

I am actually interested in driving down to participate however I can. That's a beautiful truck.

Subscribed...What an awesome car !!!! Looks like the same Candy color as my 1967 Nova.

Just talked to Tommy on the phone and he said confidence is high the owner of this hotrod Modal A Truck will have it here at our studio next Thursday!

The studio is reserved for another project for Saturday, October 22nd so we'll have to do this on a Thursday night.

As soon Tommy here's back from the owner we'll confirm on the forum.

One look and the first thing that ran across my mind was how much hand polishing this will take. Then Mike ask for a "team". Hmmmmm!.

There are so many nooks, curves, and odd panels. This is going to be seriously labor intensive.

Really looking forward to seeing this one.

Piece of cake. ( 3 flat panels, driver's door, passenger door and roof) Everything else is going to be a beast to tackle.

Everything else is going to be a beast to tackle.

That second sentence is the key sentence...

Body styles like this truck are not hard to work on, just challenging. Anyplace that cannot be easily and safely reached by machine simply has to be addressed by hand, that's why it's important and valuable to have both good machine and hand skills when it comes to buffing out cars.

Here's an example where I removed sanding marks by hand using a medium cut polish the analogy being that if a person can remove #2000 grit sanding marks by hand then a person can remove a majority of swirls and scratches by hand using the same techniques.

This article can be found in my article list under Polishing Paint by Hand

Mike Phillips said:
Removing Scratches By Hand

I induced straightline scratches by hand, then ran a tape line across the paint, then worked the scratches out by hand using Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover, (4 well worked applications), followed by Wolfgang Finishing Glaze, (2 gentle applications), then striped with 17% IPA

I should hear from Tommy today to find out if Thursday is going to work, if not I have a new Jeep lined up.
