I was thinking of getting one to make my laptop GPS capable. Anyone use or no anyone that uses?

They are pretty common. I have voice activated GPS on my phone. That's what I use.

Nice way to save some money and pretty much get what you want.

Yeah, I don't use it all that much, but it has come in handy. I have sold many, many of those USB GPS. The one that MS makes.

I can't seem to find the USB device MS uses. Are their any other brands you recommend? I've been looking at Globalsat, and Holex, and Garman.
I thinking of using either MS Streets & trips 2006 or 2007. Any feedback on these or others?

I bought MS streets and trips 2006 last year at Costco for $99 I think with the USB GPS. Works great. My wife and I use it when we travel but one of our main uses is going to yard sales lol. I just enter in the streets from the paper or web page and tell it to route me the fastest way and away we go.

I was looking at Gramin and DeLorme but ended up going with MS Streets &
Trips 2007 for the price - $69.00 (Staples $79.00-10.00 coupon).

I used it while I was in Baltimore last week and it worked great. It had no problem connecting to a satellite even though it was raining, cloudy and the gps receiver was connected directly to the laptop (not sitting in the window).

I haven't used any other GPS systems so I don't know how it compares but this really helped my navigating though downtown Baltimore with all the detours on MLK Birthday.

What I'm hoping to achieve is plugging it in, and sitting my laptop in the passenger seat and letting this thing tell me how to get to Detail Fest. I've been told that "Streets & trips" as voice feedback. Am I asking to much out of this?

Which GPS device came with yours. I noticed you can purchase different ones with your software. Do you know how much different version 07' is '06

Works well at giving you voice guidance. It'll tell you a little before your turn "in .2 miles turn right onto ramp". Hit the spacebar and it'll repeat for you. It will automatically zoom in on the section when you are going to be making a turn. If you go off route you hear "Off Route". The night screen map setting is nice when driving at dark. Having the big screen size helps too.

:iagree: Pharo answered it for you.

This is what I have -

Sorry, I don't know the difference between 06-07.

I use the GPS system from Delorme. Got it about 3 years ago and upgrade each year for about $30. I saw that they had it on sale (including the LT-20 receiver) for $69 at Best Buy (normally $99). Worth every penny, I've been in the middle of nowhere trying to find a trailer on a dirt road and it put me right on the fromt door step. It will give voice directions and you can connect a microphone to give it dozens of commands. Can't say enough good things about it.http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?section=10091&item=24708

Does it require alot of reading up to use it, or is it pretty much plug and play?
I wonder how that software compares to Streets & trips.

After loading it for the first time I went out to my car and plugged in the reciever to my USB port and it had a lock on my location in 15 seconds. I was traveling from Vero to Naples and decided to go around the back side of Lake O, no problems there. I typed in my destination address, clicked on my current position and it created a route. It initially tried to keep me on I-95 / I-75, but you can click on a preferred road or "via" and it automatically updates your route. In 2006 they added auto zoom in and out near turns so you can see intersection details and then back to the big picture.

Once in Naples, I had some time to kill for lunch and used it to locate places within a mile of my current location - I ended up goiing to a great little Cuban restaurant that I had previously drove by in a strip center without noticing. It has literally millions of hotels, stores, gas stations, restaurants, etc that you can find in seconds.

There are a lot of features, but is as easy as typing in origin, destination, and any stops on the way.

It is the Delorme version that came out before the LT-20. Came with the software. They've upgraded to one that is hardwired to the device (LT-20) and USB on the other end because the older one (the one I have) has a connector shell that pops open once in a while - the new one is better.

They sell the Street Atlas 2007 (maps only) by itself, or with the device and mapping software together for about $99. The link above shows a picture of the little yellow device that you get.
