Anyone use modeling clay?

they have good coupons but their regular prices are crazy!

One of my old next door neighbors tried this. We laughed at him, he was forever being cheap. It didn't workout so well for him. It smeared all over the place and didn't pick anything up from the surface. I'm sure there are different clays, maybe you found one that works.

Funny, Ive had them both in my hands and they do feel similar. But most modeling clays have some colorant or dye in them so Ill stick with automotive.

My wife drug me to that God awefull place just last week. I was not aware I could've picked up something for me 2 :)

Tell me about it...but there are always the little art brushes for chip touchup! And IIRC some years ago on another forum in a thread like this a lot of people decided that the clay used to temporarily stick up posters, etc., was a lot like detailing clay, rather than the modeling clay used here. Pretty much same arguments about it falling apart, etc, but boy was it cheap!

Also IIRC the Automagic clay patents will be expiring over the next several years, looks like between 2013-2018 (there are 6 of them on my ClayMagic bar, one of them has lapsed), so likely clay will get cheaper somewhere in that period.

With decontamination systems getting easier to use like Iron and Tar X as well as a variety of brands of coatings and nano tech coming on line clay is lasting longer and being used less as well.

I have heard from other companies that in 2013 they should be able to sell their clay here in the United States, but that is if Clay Magic doesn't try to extend it for the five years.

Bring on more Riccardo :hungry:

Clay Magic will screw us. But it's a nice thought, Bilt Hamber, Riccardo, Dodo SuperNatural, and maybe Optimum will offer theirs in the US? Hmm...

We should write to the government that the clay bars that we have been receiving is radioactive since their nuclear reactors went haywire. That'd get the government involved real quick. Im the MAN

I guess I could just walk down the hall ;)

I don't think it's a matter of extending, but that the later patents build on the earlier ones, kind of "taking over" from the earlier expiring patents. The most recent patent seemed to be mostly about the clay holders (hand and PC), but they use the clay from the earlier patents and were included as separate claims. So I guess ITW (current holder last I checked) would try to claim the clay itself was covered under that last patent which will technically expire in early 2017, but it looks like since the granting of the patent was delayed, will actually expire mid-2018.

Auto Wax Inc/Auto Magic/Clay Magic was pretty successful in defending these patents (back prior to being aquired by ITW), so I guess there's an even chance that they will get that newest patent to hold until 2018.

Well here's a consideration..can detailing clay be used as modeling clay? I'd say YES based on what my 7 year old daughter was able to do with it:

My Talented Daughter - Live2Detail

That's really neat. I started drawing on a regular basis at 5. I've never drawn a stick figure. Your daughter seems talented.

I would have loved more art supplies as a kid. crayons, pastels, markers, drawing pads are nice. However, now there are drawing tablets for the computer like the Wacom Intuos 4. You don't need paper for that, and you don't make a mess. There are so many effects you can get into with that. The Wacom Intuos are the good ones, that have the most pressure sensitivity of the drawing instrument, and gives the most precise results.

Expensive in the sort term, but it sure saves on supplies over the long term. Maybe you can be a really good dad and buy her one with a nice big monitor and some software, like Corel Painter. Right now I have a 65 inch Mitsubishi DLP HD TV as my monitor, and it is really awesome for art. I have no drawing tablet, though. Expensive for me. I use a trackball. :)
Obviously a computer won't allow her to sculpt, but it's a nice art tool.

Detailing clay can be used for modeling, but my experience is that it is far too sticky. You need lube just so it won't stick to your fingers. Of course if the clay is dirty, it is a lot less sticky. Modeling clay is the least sticky clay. It should be, in order to work with it the most easily.

Two thumbs way up for her work.

HUMMMMM. If this is the case then perhaps doughnut glaze can be used on a vehicle in place of Megs #7 or PB BH! :D

I tried some on my wifes old Mazda and it worked great! Just as good on a side-by-side (hood) comparo with Clay Magic, fine grade. NO difference. I just had to use DoDo Slippy Lube instead of just any old spray detailer. Not convinced? Then I used it on my father-in-laws red Chevy Equinox. NO marring; NO added swirles; NO issues. Why did I do this? It was eating at me to try it after I saw some in an art supply store @ $3.69 for 1 LB! And yes ... I did the plastic baggie test. I posted this on another forum and 1 guy said they are two completely different animals (detailing clay + modeling clay). May be so. Results and price are all that matters. Tomorrow I'm doing a black CTS and I won't hesitate to try it again. Purists may ban me for life, but ... Cheers!
After doing several cars with the modeling clay, I can safely say it works good. Sometimes. When I went to try it on my neighbors sit-outside-all-the-time 08 Chevy Equinox (dark blue), it just wouldn't "cut it". Too much tree sap and other stuff. I went and got my clay magic ... wala! But yesterday I used it on my daughters sit-inside van. Wala. Per the baggie test, it removed all the contamination. I know you've asked for pics ... but how do I show contamination removed on a video when when the only way you can tell it's gone is with a baggie test. Modleing clay works ... PERIOD! Sometimes. Uhm - period!
