Anyone using "Square" Credit Card reader?

I have a Question for those of you who have signed up already.

When did you get your FIRST email from Square? Immediately after signing up or after bank verification?

I ask because I have not received any sign-up confirmation. Usually signing up for anything these day's results in an instantaneous confirmation email. Going to https://squareup.com/activate shows that my device has been shipped. Yes I checked SPAM and yes my email is correct. I'm just waiting for the deposit/charge to go through for bank verification.

Only gripe I have is that using the reader does take getting used to. It can be finicky but usually works within 2-3 attempts if it doesn't go the first time around.

See post below.

...because I couldn't get the reader to work. Not a big deal really, and I'm very happy with it so far. My clients loved it too! I take a pic of their car and it emails them the receipt with the pic. They also sign the screen with their finger.

Best part is no monthly fee's! I would rather get cash, but it can be an inconvenience for the client, especially when the jobs are nearing or in the 4 figure range. :props:

I read in the Squareup FAQ's that there may be a clear layer or residue left over from the manufacturing process, on the 1/8" jack. It is likely at the base or "sleeve" portion of the jack. Clean it off.

Yeah, no monthly fee's sealed the deal for me! A pic of their freshly detailed car on the (emailed) receipt, too cool! Refer to $1000+ transaction info on the square website.

I've been looking at this for the future when I upgrade to the iPhone. do you add the 2.75% onto the price if they want to pay by cc? I think that if I was to get this that's probably what I would do.

The % is taken right off the top, the remainder is deposited straight to your account.

...but honestly you are just going to get charged another 2.75% see the example below:

There is going to be a fee on the $154.13 of 2.75% so it will keep on compounding so technically you can't get out of it...

Yeah, but if the detail costs $150 and you charge the extra $4.13 processing fee and then the 2.75% Square takes from that is $4.24. So, $154.13 minus $4.24 is $149.89... So your only out $0.11 instead of $4.13 from the "Cash discount" price of $150.00. :xyxthumbs:

For me it's so infrequent that I usually just eat the fee as a cost of doing business.

KISS method. :props:

Yeah well when the times comes I'll go down that road. For now I'm strictly a cash or check business.

See reply below.

You actually trust checks? WOW! I haven't taken a check for a few years (I won't even take them from good long time personal friends or family) I have been burned way too many times...

In my business, I see A LOT of checks, like hundreds monthly. Now, I don't do the accounting or even really have to deal with the checks at all (my grandfather is our accountant) but the time will come. So the Squareup is very welcome to me and my business.

The cash discount is the way to go IMHO if you don't want to eat the cost...

Back to the OP... I just signed up! I think it is a great idea! Do you know the rough time as to when the reader will arrive?

Copy/paste from Square FAQ's-
"Your reader will happily be delivered to it's new home sitting on top of your device within 1-2 weeks, though many users report it arriving within 3-5 business days. Once you sign up and are activated, we'll automatically send you an email letting you know your new money making machine is on its way."

I just signed up too. It's going to be nice to offer this service to my customers. Like Chad said when you are talking about a grand or more people don't want to walk around with that much cash all the time.

Also look the over $1000 info. Well, I just glanced over it briefly. Seems that basically they hold amounts over $1000 for 30 days until you are in good standing, which happens automatically if you use the card reader (swipe not keyed-in), don't do lots of chargebacks/refunds and don't violate terms of use. Seems legit. Link- https://help.squareup.com/customer/portal/articles/11863

Thanks for the reply's I'm glad I found this little square, still lookin for a little triangle though. :D

I received mine in about 5 business days.

Nice! I hope mine comes fast! I have a Groupon that goes up this Friday so I plan on scheduling customers starting next Monday (as Saturday is my Birthday and the wife has plans most of the day)

Its a good device to have. And you could potentially reach customers that normally wouldn't buy a detail. There's something that makes putting 100 dollars on a credit card easier than spending 100 dollars cash for some people. Square is actually not that bad of a fee when you compare it to some other companies rates, some charge a monthly fee and activation fee. I do think they need a better reader but it's free for the service and free for the reader, so get one just in case. I have one for my iTouch and bought a nice stylus for signatures.

Which stylus did you end up geting I have been looking for a good one for a while but I keep getting mixed reviews on the ones that I have looked at...

A couple hours ago I sent two emails to Square support. One was my question about confirmation emails, the other a suggestion and description for either-

1) A new card reader model with a backing that overhangs the back of the phone to hold it securely in place and prevent it from twisting when in use. Could be that the back slides down, so as not to change the "square" form factor.

2) A slip-on case that has the same functionality as above.

I just received both my confirmation email and separate email with a friendly reply to my suggestions. She said that the dev. team may be working on something just like my "great ideas" or something to that effect.

So I'm pretty happy with customer service so far!

That company square had opened new avenues of income for me, easy to use with great technology :)

I like using it. Some of my customers love the thought's of being able to swipe their card with my iPhone :)

If you can charge extra for using a credit card than how do gas stations charge you more for credit than cash??

I know that some places do attempt to charge extra to cover the cc fees but I know tat the local gas station to me just gives a "discount" on cash transactions... They post the price up on the board for the cc price and if you walk in and pay cash they give you a pleasant little surprise with a discount!

A local gas station by me does this as well. A small discount for cash is how it's advertised.

Used it and loved it for about 4 months. I just eat the CC charge as it really is not that big of a deal, and it has brought me some more customers as it is easier to pay off a full correction over time then in one lump.
