My wife's Acura has wheels that look like the skin has peeled off if you will. It does not clean. Are there prodects to make the wheel uniform in it's look?

The wheel is in fact damaged if there is peeling... The only thing that can be done now would be to sand down and repaint...

Can you clean up the wheel and check? It could be fine, but from that picture its hard to tell if its peeling or just really dirty.

The skin is called clear coat. Looks like those wheels have seen to many harsh wheel cleaners. I'm afraid they need to be re-painted or powder coated.

I don't know about you guys, but all i can see is dirt lol... And the lighter spot looks like its just cleaner than the rest.

You should wash the wheels to get a clearer picture.

:iagree:

I can't tell either. Once the wheel is a little cleaner you can tell by feeling it. If it spot in question seems sunken in to the area around it, than it is damage. It would also most likely be a different color than the rest when wet. Usually darker.

+ 4 on giving that wheel a proper cleaning and re-pic :Picture:

Brake dust is very corrosive and can eat through the clear coating if left on for long periods of time. Get some Griot's heavy duty wheel cleaner and clean those wheels good. Then do an overall inspection.

First things first...Welcome to AGO!!! Now as for the wheels, find a wheel cleaner that is safe on all rims. Autogeek sales several wheel cleaners that are safe on all wheels. Get them cleaned-up and inspect for peeling. If they are peeling then they will need to be sanded and painted or powder coated as mentioned in an earlier post. Always be sure the wheel cleaner you are using is safe for your type of wheel. I have found that Optimum Power Clean works great on brake dust also don't use a stiff bristle brush as these can scratch your rims. I hope this helps.:dblthumb2:

Even easier way to check now...

Get your wheel brush/ sponge/ mitt or whatever you use, put some car wash shampoo in a bucket (with water, but maybe use a little more shampoo than you would normally use on the paint) and give that wheel a scrub. It will probably remove all or atleast most, of that brake dust and then take another pic for us.

That way you don't have to go out and buy a wheel cleaner just to find if it's ruined or not. Easy peasy :dblthumb2:

Granted the picture does look like a stain of some kind, but didn't the OP say it was peeling? Never seen dirt peel like skin. Sounds like the clear coat is peeling.

I dont think the OP really knows if its peeling or not and thats why he is asking .
I enlarged the pic to get a better look and dont see any peeling what so ever.

But I could be wrong , its happened now and then. :p

This is what the OP posted...

Why would everyone keep saying that he needs to clean them? He has tried this!

The clear coat on Acura wheels tends to flake off in little bits when it does this you can't see it very well except the area it has flaked in is kinda dull... That being said in the area that the "damage" is pointed out in there is a big difference in the color of the dirt it is darker...

My recommendation with clear that is peeling off of your wheels is to find a mobile wheel painter and have him repair your wheels. In my last place I lived in Florida, I had a guy do mine for about 50 bucks a wheel, which was a good deal, and they looked sharp.

Thank you, exactly my point.:dblthumb2:

The reason I ask, is because I know those wheels can come out cleaner then that picture portrays. It looks to me like some wheel bearing grease got on there and the OP is having a tough time removing it

If in fact the clear coat is peeling, google, "Wheel Repair" and "Your City" and you should find someone that refinishes wheels. Around here, it goes for around $100-$125 to refinish a factory coated aluminum wheel

OP....are you still with us :help:
