Single stage paint is paint that has only has one "layer" unlike today's clear coated paint jobs. Today's paints contain 3 steps - the primer, the pigment (color) paint, and finally the clear coat. For SS paint, the clear is a part of the pigmented (colored) paint so there is only one layer. Old SS paints were laquer-based I believe. From what I've read, they are a little softer than today's clear-coated paints.
