I started working on a clients car this morning. I finished half of the deck lid and noticed black specks all over the paint. This can't be normal right? I have to clean the backing plate off every few section passes but it keeps coming right back. I'm afraid I am going to mess up someone's paint. I've watched several videos of people using their 21es, they do not seem to have this problem.

Are you trying to do heavy correction with polishing setup? Maybe to much pressure and to long of a working time? If so, step up to a more aggressive pad and polish in order to cut faster while generating less heat.

Or maybe it's a defective backing plate. I've had them fail on me before.

No pressure, no heat build up. I was using a cleaner wax. This happens with or with out pressure, hot or cold. Yeah, I really think the backing plate is defective.

What machine are you using?

Is the backing plate hitting the housing anywhere?

Is the compression washer on the backing plate?

We use all the Rupes polishers all the time here for project cars and I've never seen anything like this before.

I've seen the backing plates made first hand,

Top Secret Pictures – How Rupes Bigfoot Polishers are made!

I was not given permission from Rupes to take pictures of the process but after witnessing how they are made standing about 7 feet from the machine it's a very hi tech process.

An easy way to troubleshoot and test this issue would be to get a new backing plate and see if the problem goes away.

If it does then that's a pretty good indicator the problem was faulty backing plate.

If the problem doesn't go away then we need to look elsewhere for the issue.

:)

Good talking to you on the phone today Jeremy.

We'll have the new backing plate in the mail today. Give the new backing plate a test and let us know how it goes.

I will also send the link to this thread to my engineer friends at Rupes as a professional courtesy to monitor the feedback.

Thank you for your business!

Same too you Mike. No washer mod for others interested. We will know in the next couple of days if it's just a bad backing plate.

I have a car to do Tuesday. Mike, the package arrived on Saturday. Thank you sir!

In for update as well. I have a Rupes15 and the backing plate gets wicked hot but no black stuff coming off.

Sorry for taking so long. I had to cancel some appointments, my son had to have an emergency appendectomy. The new backing plate burned up after a panel. I received my new 21 this past Friday and used it today. I have no issues with it so far. Mike and the Autogeek crew are awesome people to work with. Speaking of work, that's what this Rupes polisher does best. It annihilates paint defects. I just happened to get a bad one, it happens.

I have the same problem. The backing plate gest so hot that it literally melts the center of the pad. I have already destroyed 3 LC pads. The washer mod didn't change the situation. Another problem I have, my unit "shakes" like a champ when driven by the handle. I feel sorry for choosing Rupes over Flex. Rupes LHR15ES problem ?!: http://youtu.be/TdL6YUeXaDc
