Backing plate failed

Any feedback from Griot's concerning my experience with the backing plate? I'm a little apprehensive about using the one I have

Hi Bill,
Have you reached out to anyone in our customer service or has anyone reached out to you yet?

Nope I haven’t. The only time I did was the time when I called and wound up buying a plate.

Bill,

Going back and reading your post, do you still have the GG6?

I still do it’s my primary polisher. Great machine otherwise

Rod,

So is spd 5&6 on the new machines dangerous for pad/backing plate safety?

Hi 2wookies,

We designed all of our machines/backing plates to handle all speed ranges. Setting the proper speed to maintain pad rotation/orbit is critical depending on what type of work is being done. In the situation with the backing plate failure, it seems the backing plate was defective and will be warrantied. I rarely run my machines past speed 4, 4.5. Hope this helps.

When I had mine, it disintegrated. I guess that was a manufacturer defect also. I used the one I had to buy to replace it once. I always do fear in the back of my mind that it may fail too. I hope the newest batch of plates are defect free.

Will Griot's send me a new plate or do I have to request by calling CS?

Bill, Backing plates take a lot more abuse than most people realize. Keep in mind, there are several factors involved with backing plate wear/failure. Any type of backing plate for a DA that uses a "Velcro® or Hook & Loop" system to attached the pads will always have a specific life span which in itself is determined by many more factors such as type of machine, orbit size, type of pad, pad weight both dry and with product, tool-user factors such as technique, machine speed, applied pressure, buffing cycle and even pad maintenance/care. All of our backing plates are warrantied for life for manufacturer defects and use a Velcro® brand Micro-Hook system to ensure optimal pad engagement. Even though you can use other pads with our machines/backing plates, it is a good idea to inspect both the pads and backing plates often to ensure they are in good condition and we recommend using a similar Hook & Loop for proper pad engagement. Don't forget to send me your shipping address. Thanks, Rod

Thanks Rod

All of that is understood. The plate in question was used once, maybe twice before I lost confidence in it. Hopefully the brand new one will be as durable as the machine which I found to be a joy to use. I will PM you shipping info.

Bill, When you email me, please let me know what type of pads you use.

Just wanted to say thanks a million to Mr. Rod Kraft for more than taking care of me. His action really made my week!
