I have a quick question regarding backing plates. I currently have a GG DA. I'm going to try and use 5.5 inch pads. I may be able to get a 5 inch plate locally and save on shipping. I don't know the details yet but are all backing plates the same? Or can they interchange from one DA to another? If not I will see if I can test fit it before buying. If it won't work I will go through autogeek.

Thanks for any info.

Thread size would be key. If it fit say a porter cable you'd be fine.

If the local shop will let you bring in your GG to make sure it is a fit, that would be the way to go. I can't remember, but the LC backing plates on AG might list the thread size so you could find the ones that fit GG/PC on AG and use the thread size they list if it is there, the local store could probably confirm on the phone.

EDIT: Just looked it up and it is 5/16" thread: Porter Cable 7424 Backing Plates- Dual Action Hook & Loop backing plate for your porter cable 7424, The best backing plates for the Porter Cable 7424

Be sure the hook configuration is compatible with the pads that you'll be using. On mine, the standard PC backing plate (7346 DA sander) and the Lake Country plates are compatible with the LC pads that I have.

I bought some specialized glass polishing pads (not the automotive type) for removing hard water stains on windows, shower doors, etc. and they didn't work. Required a different backing plate because the hook and loop was different.

Mike Phillips addresses the hook and loop compatibility issue in his new iBook. Wish I had read that first.
