Hello,

I'm a first time poster / member and am excited to get a brand new Explorer this weekend. The site is great, but frankly there is an overwhelming and confusing amount of info and I'm not sure where to start.

The vehicle will be Sterling Grey with a tan leather interior. My questions are, in my mind, fairly straight forward but I'm looking for some guidance.

1). What is the best thing to do on the exterior. Wax vs. sealant, or something else?

2). What's the best way to initially protect the leather?

I'm sure the dealer will try to up sell me on the above, but I'm confident that I can do it myself, save the dollars, and enjoy the process with a new vehicle. I just need some basic direction or which products to use (specific brands / products that are easy to use for a novice would be greatly appreciated).

Thanks in advance....looking forward to using the site often!

Get the Auto Geek detailing guide, as a download or the book.

I'm new to detailing and it literally goes step by step.

Don't take anything from the dealer!

Wax or sealant, it's up to personal preference. Some good choices are Collinite 845 or Blackfire Wet Diamond.

For the interior, use something like Wolfgang Trim Cockpit and I think you will be happy. :dblthumb2:

I just got a new car yesterday - dark blue with a tan leather.
I used Wolfgang Cockpit Sealant on everything but the carpet. I did that last night with a MF cloth. Went on easily and I didn't use that much. Wiped off any excess I saw but very easy. Smelled nice too. Today there was no greasy feel, bad smells or anything negative to say. Fingerprints on the trim just disappeared, leather felt great. Not sure what else is out there but I am a fan now!
For the carpet I sprayed the mats and will get the rest done with Stoner Fabprotex. Sprayed easy, dried quickly and seems to work well. Seems like the interior is coated with teflon now.
Not sure on durability of either one yet since it's only been 1 day.

Exterior - I'm going with WG Deep Gloss Paint Sealant and then Pinnacle Souvergn wax for some extra wet looking depth.

My dealer really wanted to sell my the Simonize stuff for only $995. I bought a whole bunch of stuff from AGO including a GG Polisher and still didn't spend 1/2 that. I was thinking the same as you on that one!

Congrats on the new car and welcome to AGO!

I've never used the cockpit sealant, however odds are its somewhat dirty / you'll need it eventually :D
