Before: headed to Daytona International Speedway last Saturday. Life was good:

After: headed home from the gym Tuesday. Motor blown. Life not so good:

Not sure exactly what happened to the motor but it was catastrophic. The crank is frozen which is a really bad sign. The car is leaving for Georgia on Monday via enclosed transport. The nations best Porsche engine builder will drop in a replacement motor. A proper rebuild will run well north of 19k. A new crate motor from Porsche is north of 26k. Seriously, 26 thousand for something that can fit in my bathtub!

You Porsche owners here certainly know what I am going through, especially if you have the M96 engine in yours.

Is been a horrible week but she'll be up and running in a few weeks and back on the track in January!

I feel your pain and hope its back on the road soon.

Is there any indication of the cause?

My suspicions are that the intermediate shaft bearing failed. It is a known issue in these engines from 98-2008. Porsche finally addressed it by not having that part from 09 forward. Funny thing is, I was going to upgrade that part in December when I did the clutch. Too late. It can also be a chain that broke, a valve guide or any number of things. I am not even going to bother with trying to rebuild it and just replace the whole motor.

Ouch. That's almost half down on a used GT2 after the labor bill you'll be looking at. Sorry for your loss, you seem to be handling it a lot better than I would!

Ughhh! But at least you're taking it pretty well. Good luck!

Would you buy another Porsche after this?

I looked at the new Boxsters and really liked them, but I've heard too many stories like this about Porsches. Did you approach Porsche and as them for any good will towards the repair?

I didn't take it well when it happened. When the car died I was hoping it was electrical. I put a wrench on the crank and it didn't budge. Frozen solid. But, a few days of talking with the experts calmed me down and a somewhat affordable solution was put together. I will keep it for a bit longer and either gut it for a full time track car or bite the bullet and pick up a GT3 next fall.

Porsche will not do anything for a car so far out of warranty. It's a 2000. I would buy another Porsche tomorrow. This is my third one and the first with a problem. Mechanical things break. That's the way it goes. These are really reliable engines and only a small percentage fail like this. If maintenance is deferred then more do of course.

I don't know if the 2012 Boxsters still use the IMS bearing but probably not. My engine builder has designed a permanent solution to the problem and it should be out early next year.

For what I paid for this car I certainly got tons of joy out of it. These are exceptionally fun cars and it keeps a permanent smile on my face when I am behind the wheel.

My theory is, anything can break. Enjoy it, drive the piss out of it and live life.

Just out of curiosity, you got me wondering what BMW gets for an engine for my car (08 M Roadster). So I looked it up:

Short Engine
11 00 0 431 513326S4
1146.500 kg / 322.977 lb
$19741.12

What a bargain!

That's a steal! Of course there are some catches I have learned. Labor of course but the core is where the manufacturer can stick it to ya. If your core is not to their standards then expect to pay 3-5k more. That's for Porsche but sure most are similar.
