Best Anti-Freezing Washer Fluid for NY Winters?

Stop in at one of Buffalo's auto parts stores,
like A.Z., and pick up a gallon or two of
their windshield washer reservoir fluid
that's rated to -20°F...(aka: the "blue stuff").

Or...ask one of the locals what they
use and/or recommend.

^^^best stuff I've used--called "Xtreme Blue" -20F (by Camco) at Advance Auto Parts. It cleans very well too. I've found the Rain-X stuff acts weird/smears if you have a protectant on the windshield.

I have used the 1z anti-frost stuff. It cleans well but quite foamy.

Something I've discovered. When you go to the local Jiffy Lube or Valvoline fast oil change place, don't let them top off you're washer fluid. They use the cheap watered down stuff that freezes.

The best is SAMSONITE. Pack your stuff in some bags and move to warm weather.

It works.

I've never had a washer fluid freeze on me and I've been in MN all my life, were it definitely gets cold in the winters. :dunno:
i have had reservoirs freeze up on me three times.

first time was in a Civic i had. i ran parts store blue fluid, run of the mill. the hotel i was at was on an open plateau in northeast PA. it was the dead of winter. i came out in the morning and once i got on the highway with the salty, slushy crap from the trucks...i had nothing to clear it off. i knew i was full, so i looked and sure enough, everything was frozen. again, a dangerous situation as my vision was severely hampered due to not being able to clear the windshield.

second was in a Frontier i was borrowing from my dealer/broker until my car came in. i am not sure of what was in it, but it was blue. could have been diluted. thing is, i really needed it and couldn't use it - it made for a pretty hairy drive.

last time was in my MB, believe it or not. AND it happened whilst parked in my garage - the thing hadn't been driven for several weeks if not more than a month. it actually caused the reservoir to crack and that, i found out, was not covered under warranty even though the only people to service the car whatsoever at the time were MB. specifically, the stuff in it was from the dealer in PA so who knows. but, it was blue.

after the Benz incident, i resorted to 1Z Anti-Frost and it's not just because of freezing concerns. most fluids have harsh chemicals in them and are being misted. no good. and on top of that, i am not sure how good those chemicals are on the finishes and materials we try so hard to protect. so, the 1Z stuff as a package seemed extremely attractive. downside is cost, so i will only buy it during extreme sales, bogos, etc. i also only run it in the cold months. if i need to refill outside of cold weather, i will use the 1z green concentrate stuff and distilled water.

Ethyl alcohol/Ethanol is a very good
solvent; which, in turn: also means
it is also quite corrosive.
