I even did it on my defender just removed the protector that came with it and put my own on.
I thought about doing that but I wasn't sure if there would be a gap between the phone and the case.

Getting ready to buy an iPhone 5 for my 16 year old daughter (as of Sunday).
Who makes the best case for protecting the cell phone?
Probably don't want anything too bulky since it is for a 16 year old female who will probably carry it in her pocket or in this small 'little larger than a wallet' type thing she carries.
Thanks.

I have the same in blue. Have had a number of cases and this is been the best so far. Bought one for my son also.
I really abuse mine to as everyday I take it out of the case to plug it into my Bose Soundock when in my office and also when I shoot imovies. Then at night, put it back in the case for the drive home.
I give it :dblthumb2:

I agree, the defender is a tank but it is a bit bulky. The commuter does come with a screen protector.
I see a lot of people recommending the Otterbox Defender and I don't think it is the best match. My brother has Otterbox Defender on his I Phone and it barely fits in his regular fit jeans. No way a girl wearing skinny jeans is fitting that that case in her pocket. It might fit in her wristlet though so I wouldn't completely write it off though.
I just purchased a Speck Candy Shell case and a Zagg Extreme screen protector for my I Phone 5. The phone is still on backorder so I can't comment on the case's performance yet. The deal breaker on the Otterbox for me was the built in screen protector that gets scratched over time. If a company would make an extreme protection phone case with a replaceable screen cover I would consider buying one.
