Majority of recent hype and love seems to go to the plush, long nap Mfs such as the Chinchilla, or the WW Guzzlers with their super absorbant power. While I do appreciate these products, I have to say, my most valued tool in the towel category has been my short naps. When it come to valuable stages of buffing , removing product, trying to get a stubborn wax or polish off while minimizing marring... its been my best short naps that I've gone to the shelf for.

Funny thing is, the ones that I've grabbed as my favorites have always been the ones I've received in some sort of complimentary package where I hadn't actually ordered them. So, if I were to target some high quality short nap MFs in my upcoming order, what would I shoot for?

Go for the extreme:
3M Scotch brite high performance wipe (at least thats how it is called here)
individually air tight boxed to prevent dust from getting on the towel before used
3M guarentee it to be non scratching
thats the only towel that i use on my camera lenses
it works wonder on car as well and i m still using the one i bought back in 2003.

For general tasks, Meguiars Ultimate Wipe or Supreme Shine are good emough for me. a lot of members here like Cobra Rolled edges

These are great for polish, wax removal, etc. I would say these are probably the best bang for the buck. High quality, soft and short nap. A great all around product.

The green ones are also the same. You can get them in larger quantities at the bottom of the page.

Rolled Edge Blue Microfiber

This is a good question, I'm also in the same boat. Most of mine have come as a free bonus for this or that. I have the Rolled Edge Blue Microfiber's but have yet to use them to try to remove a polish or wax

You know we used some during a detail class back in Jan and I loved them but I forgot what they were called. Need to ask Mike which ones they used.

Edgeless MF's(Hands Down);)
This is a dept were AG lacks IMHO.AG used to have one of my favorite edgeless MF and that was the Indigo. The same one that used to come with the Pinnacle Souveran Paste Wax.Until the supplier switched to hot wire/laser cut edges.
Even the Sonus Green edgeless was an EXCELLENT MF until they were also switched to hard hot wire cut edges.ChemicalGuys used to also offer their White Edgeless MF and were excellent until they went hot wire/laser cut as well.
The problem I think is,these over sea's suppliers are trying to save cost and increase profits by using these techniques and then the quality of the edgeless MF suffers because if this action!
Some EXCELLENT edgeless MF's are Pak's SilverSurfer,Blue Brilex, and even the Adams black edgeless MF are of quality and Adams advertises them as their general purpose wheel/door jamb Towel(I beg to differ).

Dang :( Just picked up 6 of the green sonus towels, and noticed that only 1 of the edges on each towel looked hot wire cut, that just confirms my thinking. The hot wire cut edges still dont feel that hard tho. Oh well, im sure they'll make good glass towels then. I think I'll finally get the Pak edgeless ones and try out the blue brilex once there in stock

Yes,but we as consumers(more important, passionate detailers and enthusiast)should not have to settle for that(sub-par hard edgeless edges). No different than having "hard/harder" rolled edges and being acceptable.Granted I've never heard of any rolled edge MF's with hard edges,I'm just saying a "quality" edgeless shouldn't have hard edges.Grateful there are still offerings that don't.

Indigo's used to be the best. I am glad I have a bunch. Now it a ???? for me.

Having not found much value in the online choices concerning microfiber towels I did a sweep of all the local suppliers in my area, buying up a few of each supplier's best microfiber towels. My findings were a 70/30 general wiping towel at a auto refinishing supply for $18 a dozen and a great plush finishing towel, also 70/30 at $10.99 for a 4 pack at a dealership supply. The guy with the 4 pack cringed as he told me the price and then looked relieved as I told him the price was OK. These are the best towels I have used period, irregardless of price.

Point being...Great towels are out there, you just need to find them.

I expect to pay no more than $1 each for a 80/20 towel and these can be found anywhere, yet I see internet stores selling these 80/20 towels at high prices and I have yet to find one that's anything more than average. I have yet to find a 70/30 microfiber towel for less than $2.50 each on any internet detailing store, and until I do I'll continue to buy them locally.

This post may not be all that useful but I feel that finding great microfiber towels can be quite disappointing and frustrating and I have thrown enough money into the wind trying to narrow down my search for the right products and tools to get great results.

I think Mothers has the nicest short nap MF towels. Only available on their web site. 12 pack is $25. Its the same MF they package in thier OTC clay and other kits.

:iagree:

Yes, I bought their Clay kit a while back and this was one of the random towels on my shelf I was talking about. Funny, when I bought it, I was a little ticked I had to buy the kit as I only wanted a bar of clay. Ended up getting two bars, a nice MF, and a bottle of good QD.

I thought when I originally posted this it would be one of the easier questions to answer, but it seems there is a lot of searching going on for something that I thought would have been a very simple area of detailing. Wishing I hadn't missed the boat on the Indigos.

I have found that most of the real good towels range in the $3-6 ea. range. I wait for group buys or discount buys. Checking for deals. I have found that searching for towels that by buying small lots I do not end up with alot of wheel or engine towels, etc. I prefer the 70/30 blend.
