Halogen, Incandescent, Fluorescent, or LED. I plan to purchase new standing lights after this weekend.

Each lights shows different things better than the other...I suggest having more than one. I use a hand held Brinkmann Dual xenon and a Fenix LED. My overhead lights are florescent and I have both halogen and LED light stands. My Fenix LED seems to be the better all around light for inspection

Metal halide seem to be great for showing swirls and holograms.

^I agree... I have 4 different light sources (and the sun) that I use to check my work as I am going. I find that the brinkmann shows da haze much better than halogens for instance, so it is good to have multiple sources to really check your results.

Also, what ever source you use, make sure to look at the panels from different angles as well, not just straight on. You will be surprised what you will find.

Thats something that I recently learned. It is amazing at what you didnt see from a certain angle that becomes clear as day from another.

Thanks for the responses. I'm not willing to buy 4 different styles of lighting right now. So if you had to go with just 1, which would you get

High pressure sodium bulbs work great too! But rasky is right, there is no one best.

The single diode LED flood bulbs in 5000K from Home Depot or Lowes do an amazing job of showing swirls even on light colors. Much better than the Halogen work lights and without the heat. I turn off all other lights when polishing with just the light from the LED you can immediately see your progress. You can use the LED floods with an inexpensive photo stand. Since I only do my own cars one light is fine for me--just have to move it allot--but you can use a heavier duty photo light stand for two if need be.

This thread has some great information regarding garage lighting with some great ideas--you don't have to go all out, but can use the information to improve lighting to your satisfaction without spending a fortune. Later in the thread you'll see some examples of the LED floods on photo stands.

Finally a comprehensive review of the best bulbs out there... - Autopia Forums - Auto Detailing & Car Care Discussion Forum
