Best way to clean inside of super dirty rim?

Do you have a picture or two of the
wheel's face (and its finish)? Thanks.

Haha I never thought to have taken a picture of the front, as they are flawless!

I will get pictures of the actual rims tomorrow, but for now here is a good image of what they look like. They are factory rims from a higher trim level 1996-2001 Honda CR-V.

IME no wheel cleaner, including IronX, Wheel Bright, Brown Royal, etc... will clean that off completely or satisfactorily. I have similar deposits and have tried many cleaners as well. My next plan of attack (when I get the chance) will be P21S Multi Surface Restorer using a trial of various application methods. I've seen what this product can do on other surfaces, and it can be quite aggressive as a polish to clean off gunk.

My belief of exactly what that "black stuff" is, is years of burnt on friction material from disc brakes mixed with iron shavings from rotors. I don't believe it's road tar, as tar removers will not remove it.

A question is, has anyone seen this build up on a wheel that has only been mounted on a drum brake axle?

I doubt any chemical will completely remove that pitting. Perhaps a brass wheel on some kind of rotary tool will grind it out of there.

Key word, pitting! Its not just something that can be cleaned away. So i agree that it will be completely removed. The wheel itself is damaged. I just had my 1 year old wheels replaced for pitting.

I just cleaned some wheels that looked a little like that on the outside. Several treatments later with iron-x took it off with some scrubbing.

I have a similar question to what the op has except it's not how clean I can get my wheels but how safe is it to use it on my wheels. I have an 05 accord with rings that look pretty similar in shape and finish as the ones that the op posted a picture of. It's meguiars wheel brightener safe to use on these kinds of wheels?

Are the inner and outer barrels/faces of your wheels...
So really: terribly-dirty, filthy, mucked-up...
to have to resort to using such a potent wheel cleaner?

Wow, one year? They just don't make 'em like they used to! Wheels like the OP's are pretty common in my parts (Mid-Atlantic Coast). Salt water and air will eat EVERYTHING very quickly!

Yeah, i was fairly pissed when i washed them after winter. I'm guessing it was the salt mixture. The dealer said it wasn't normal but i think I'm going to switch them out next winter, to be safe. I thought the DP wheel coating would protect them....wrong.

I have bought some materials today I think will tackle wheel barrels like the OP posted. It will take me a few weeks to get around to it, but I will post what I find.
