Greetings all, I am new on here and looking to take a stab at resolving the fading issue going on with my 98 Ford Mustang Cobra's black paint finish. I keep the car garaged and use NuFinish in the summer months on it. The black finish still seems to be dulling over time and I was wondering if there were any tips to correct and enhance the finish. I have had the car since 07 and it has only in the last 3-4 years been showing signs of dulling.

My girlfriend has a 99 Ford Ranger that is black as well, no rust or damage but heavily neglected and fading similarly but about 5 times worse. I would like to find a similar resolution to apply to her pickup as well.

Any help/products anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. I am an active duty military member that would feel much better about leaving my vehicles protected from the elements when I get sent to the sandbox again.

FYI, I am buying a 6in DA polisher and not tackling it all by hand.

Thanks!

Welcome to AGO!

Are you able to take photos of the ranger and post them?

Good idea by working with machine!

Thank you for your service sir.

I have a 96 SVT Cobra black and a brown 90 Ranger. So I'll subscribe to this thread.

Greetings fellas, always good to see/hear from fellow Ford fans. My pleasure to serve!

I don't have any close ups of the Cobra's fading (hood, tops of fenders only). I attached a pic of it from January when I pulled it out of the garage for a quick wash. I can tell that it is very much savable and I will tread lightly with whatever product line I go with. I read some good things about the Blackfire Wet Diamond brand and was thinking about ordering a bottle.

The girlfriends Ranger, almost embarrassed to post pics of the fading going on lol. She bought this truck brand new, and has kept it over the years (all outside). I hate to see it deteriorate any further paint finish wise. I already ran through it mechanically and tuned it up. It is a solid pickup, just needing some loving from a detail oriented individual.

I will snap some pics of it next chance I get. It will likely make a GREAT before and after model for a products application results potential.

I am up for and appreciative of any recommendations for products/techniques to utilize to undo our black finish fadings.

first of all get any compound or scratch remover and use it on a small test spot, let us know if it turns black or not

some close up pictures would be helpful

I added a couple shots of the girlfriends Ranger and my Cobra. The lighting makes it hard to discern the fading on the Cobra. You almost have to see it in person. The Ranger, self explanatory lol.

I am wondering where to start with the Ranger....

I finally got around to taking a swing at the dull paint on the girlfriend's 99 Ranger. I used a DA buffer with Meguires Ultra Cut compound and followed it up with a coat of NuFinish. It turned out pretty well.

I still have work to do on it but it defintely is a night and day difference thus far. Considering this pickup probably has never been waxed since the day she bought it brand new, the results are decent.

I will likely hit it again with a finer polishing later on but I wanted to get a start on it as it was making my skin crawl looking at it that way.

Congrats Wisconian...you've found out that a good, thorough wash, clay, polish can do wonders. The photos look like you could call it "done", especially for someone who hasn't waxed the car in, what, 14 years?

(and how does someone with the handle "Wisconian" end up in Ohio?)

Thanks fellas, out of respect for the vehicle alone it was well overdue and deserving some attention. Add in the fact it is my girlfriend's pickup she bought new in High School and has held onto this whole time (despite having other cars), it was well worth putting in the time for.
