Bought a g110v2 need cleaner, wax and backer plate suggestions please.

After buying 3-4 wax spreaders over the years I decided to invest in something better suited to cleaning up light oxidation, scuffs, and adding some life to the crappy old cars I drive.

I bought a new g110v2 for $97 with everything but the backer plate but after that found myself getting slightly overwhelmed with information and what to purchase next.

I want either an AIO able to do light correction (such as medium oxidation) or a simple two step consisting of a cleaner followed by wax that will fit a wide range of applications, so pretty much a two step version of the AIO (provided you think the additional work is worth the gains).

Also, I was going to grab the W68DA backer plate for $22 shipped but I'm open to other suggestions if there's something more versatile.

Thank you so much for any input, there is way too much info out there for a novice to sort out what would best fit them not having much hands on experience.

The Meguiar's Dual Action Polisher will definitely do a much better job when working on paint than the traditional orbital polisher.

This is a light cleaner/wax that works really well

This is a medium cleaner/wax that works really well


Meguiar's ColorX


For a two step process where you correct and polish the paint and after that apply some type of wax or synthetic paint sealant this is a very versatile medium cut polish.


Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover


The link above goes to the quart size for Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover, it's the best deal for this product. One thing for sure, this product works on a wide spectrum of paint systems and will never let you down.

My recommendation to anyone that's going to step out into the garage and buff on their cars for hours is don't skim on abrasive technology.

Excellent advice Mike. Another great AIO is Meguiar's D151 Paint Reconditioning Cream.

Like Mike said, what are your goals?
 
Wow, thank you for the well written, excellent, and quick replies.

My goal is to be able to do basic novice work with only two products and one backer plate. Does that make sense? I'm guessing this along with the g110v2 will still get me in the 80 percentile compared to hand waxing or a $20 wal-mart wax spreader.

I'd like to do some friends older cars maybe to help them out but I'm not going to use the setup more than a half dozen times per year at best.

As a rule I buy $1,000 vehicles that typically have rough paint or a fair amount of oxidation so I would just like to be able to address those issues and hopefully add to the resale when it comes time to sell.

My rec on ColorX was because it's a "consumer size bottle". I thought you were a consumer. :D

If you're doing a lot of cars, like buying and selling, then the D151 comes in a gallon, as in bulk size for Pro Detailers. The Pinnacle XMT also comes in larger sizes for detailers. You usually save money when you buy in bulk.


Also remember...


Gloss starts first with a smooth surface...


This mean you need to remove any and all above surface bonded contaminants BEFORE doing any polishing or using a cleaner/wax.

Okay, super helpful posts and insightful but hard for me to sort out as I'm unsure if there's bias on this site (as you also seem to sell the products you're endorsing) and I'm certainly not looking to spend $59 on a bottle of anything (mind you, that's 10% of the cost of one of the cars I'm using it on) so I went with the W68DA backer plate, two 7" pads for it, a maroon bottle of cleaner wax and a bottle of ColorX.

For now this will fit my needs I'm sure of it, if my needs change over time I will adjust accordingly. I will also update on how this combination works out for me and try to get some before and after pictures for others.

Meguiars D151 is the product that you are looking for. In bulk, it is very inexpensive and has a moderate level of cut (not common for AIOs) -- yet it still leaves behind protection that is good for a short period of time.

Considering that you'll only be using a few oz per car (if that), a one-gallon jug of D151 will last you a long time.
 
Your selection of 7" pads will work but Mike's recommendation of the 5.5 pads will work a lot better with your machine. You mention the fact those recommended products are sold here. Go to ANY detailing forum and the advice will be the same about pad size. Other product choices may vary from site to site but the majority of detailers use smaller pads.
 
Okay, Mike seems very knowledgable and willing to help if there's a sale made or not, I have always gone with the "never trust the advice of somebody that stands to gain from it" mind frame but after much research found myself right back to what he was telling me. So let that be a lesson to others, save yourself the time.

Went with the 5" backing plate and the D151 after all, it's quantity overkill for me but sounds like the product I want and the cost per ounce is the lowest.

So there you have it, simple solution is the g115v2 with a 5" backer plate and a gallon of D151 if you want to stay in that point of diminishing returns sweet spot. I bought a few different pads just to get a feel for what I like best.
